Free Will and Testament. Too good to be true?

Got a letter this morning from a local Will writing company inviting me to their offices for a free Will and Testament apparently "completely free of charge and there are no catches".

This is apparently because "we need to increase our client base from 8000 to 12000 by the end of 2009 due to possible forthcoming regulations, the quickest way for us to achieve this is by offering a free Will & Testament to the general public" They are apparently offering this service to my estate only.

The enclosed voucher offers a free "mirror will" or free "single will" - I have no idea even what these are

So, does this sound too good to be true? DH and I do not have a will but we do have 1 small child and another on the way so a Will would probably be a good idea.

Could this be for real?

A mirror will is one where partners have identical wills (hence cheap to draw up the second will), usually leaving all to the surviving partner in the first instance and then identical clauses for the second death.

Can't comment on where the catch is, possibly they want you on a database to sell you financial services, or to sell your details on.

Sarah - I usually find, many think me quite cynical that you don't get anything for nothing I agree with the other posters, they may want to sell you some add on insurance etc, Have you checked your bank account? lots do do a free will service as a perk of your account, no doubt they might go through your stuff and see if you need any more life cover etc, but as my bank do this every year anyway it doesn't bother me to much, whereas having to go through it all with yet another new person annoys the pants off me.

To OP a will is definitely a good idea. I finally got round to doing mine the other day. As Leningrad says they will try and sell you their executor service - or some other service for a fee. So long as you go in understanding this then that's fine. Don't feel under any pressure to buy. They probably have worked out that for every one person who takes the 'full service' they can afford to offer XX free wills. So win win all round.
