Just wondered if anyone knows what (if anything) we might be able to claim.

Me: SAHM
DH: made redundant last week
DC: two, under 3

At the moment we get child benefit. Never went down the tax credits line as we were over threshold when I was earning (stopped April 08)

Can't quite believe I am asking, and we do have some money fron DH's job, but it won't last forever. I am going back to work in Sept part time.

Thanks anyone!

let the tax credits people know straightaway. We have just qualified for working tax credits for the first time and the tax credits have been a saving grace for us. DH and I are both self employed, btw, and things have been slow for both of us.

if you let tax credits know what your income was for 08/09 tax year, they will give you "back pay" if you qualify.

the other thing about being on working tax credits is that prescription costs and most of your eye costs are covered. there is a difference between working tax and child tax credits but they will sort that out for you. don't have the number to hand at the moment - will let you have it later.

and yes, of course, betsyboop is right: do check out that website. (i did not know what figures to enter because of DH only hav ing started his business last year and I am a childminder so I did not know whether to put in gross or nett but hopefully it will give you a good idea.)

good luck. i hope your DH gets sorted soon.

Second Numberfour, tax credits will be your port of call. Your entitlement is based on previous years earnings, but they can adjust it if your current tax years earnings will be considerably lower (which may be the case for you)
I was a tc officer until last year, so not totally up to date but can do calculations, or answer any questions for you if I can.

Give me a shout if you'd like me to

jumpingbeans · 13/05/2009 06:42

under the boredwalk, is that true, the tc people with make adjustments if this years earnings are going to be alot lower than last, ds has just been told his commision has been stopped and he will be earnin basic pay, a drop of between 5 ans 6 hundred a month. based o last years eranings he wouldnot be entitled to anything.

UndertheBoredwalk · 13/05/2009 07:46

It is jumping yes. Tell him to call them up and ask for them to do a calculation for him. You need to go through one to get an application form from them anyway, so may aswell do it with them and get the form at the same time
Unless he's already claiming, in which case, all he needs to do is call them and give them 'current years estimated earnings' (you can only do this if you've done your renewal iirc) the claim should automatically be adjusted if it's a big difference.

I was working for them last year, this year have estimated earnings of much much less, and my tc atm are reflecting current circs rather than being wholly based on previous years earnings.
