NHS Continuing care

Does anyone know anything about NHS continuing care.

My father is in hospital at present with his 3rd infection in 3 months, he has very advanced Parkinson Disease which has led to him losing his sight. Up until now my mother has been looking after him at home but has decided that he will have to go into a nursing home as she can no longer cope.

What I want to know is how much she is likely to have to pay towards his care.

How someone can help.

I have worked occasionally as temp staff on a CC unit- as far as I am aware, the care is free?? (although im not 100%)

I will add that the care I saw delivered there was excellent in comparison to care I have seen in private homes, where clients pay £100's per week.

Hope someone can give you some more info

I think you need to have an assessment of care. Ask the ward sister on the ward his is on, or find out if your local primary care trust has community matrons you can talk to. There will also likely be a social worker involved.
I'm not entirely sure of the details bu think your father will likely need an assessment to work out how much of his care he is eligible for. Unless you live in Scotland, where personal care is free for all.
I hope things work out for you. Parkinsons is so hard in the advanced stages.

My mother has advanced Parkinson's Disease, though fortunately she wasn't blind. When she was admitted to a nursing home (not permitted to go home after a lengthy spell in hospital as my father was not, at the age of 86, able to look after her) I think she received attendance allowance - though not at the higher rate and continuing care allowance. My father had to pay for the rest --- several hundred pounds per week as their savings were well above the limit.

Thanks for your help. I will pass the info on to my mother. As my father is in hospital at the moment things will have to be sorted out before he can leave.

One of my problems is that I live 150 miles away from my parents so it is difficult to visit the hospital with my mother to discuss what should happen although my brothers are being very good as far as that goes.

Spoke to my mother today and she has received a letter confirming that my father will have fully funded continuing care and she has been sent a list of nursing homes to choose from. She is going to look at two on Friday both of which from the information she has sound very good. The continuing care will be reviewed after three months but as my father is slowly getting worse that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for all your help.

Glad the care is sorted.. must be a weight off your minds.
I hope your father settles in his new home and is well looked after.
