Late licences for pubs - know owt about them?

We live next door to a pub which is usually a quiet country restaurant, but for the last 3 Saturday nights they've had loud discos/bands till between 12 and 1am. Last Saturday the noise didn't stop till 1.45 as pissed customers were shouting to each other at the tops of their voices. Our ds can't get to sleep & he's revising for GCSEs.

I sent the pub a polite email at 2.15 on Sunday morning asking for

  1. Them to tell us when they have a late licence so we can go out
  2. To get departing guests to leave quietly.

I phoned the council licencing dept today to ask what the score is, how many late licences they can have a year etc & they said that although last Sat was covered by a licence, the other two weren't and they take it v seriously. They're going to set up a meeting with the management of the pub.

Does anyone know what the penalty is if the council are satisfied that they did have discos without a licence? The neighbours opposite the pub all park in the pub car park so are unlikely to back me up.

I don't want a big battle, I just want some peace and quiet but am getting a bit twitchy about what's going to happen now.

Any experience/advice?

Presume they would be in danger of not getting their licence renewed the next time? I'm sure I read about a pub here that had people had complained about and that broke the terms of its licence, and then it got refused.

Depends how strict the licencing committee of your local authority is, I suppose.

I asked dh,who knows about this stuff.Do you know if the pub ask for a late license when 24 hour drinking came in?

Penalty wise, they could get a slap on the wrist,a fine, have the license suspended,or worse case, rescinded.Nowadays, the premesis is licensed, not the landlord/lady.

I have sympathy with you,I've been kept awake by loud pub discos before now.

Thanks for replies. The pub apparently has a temporary event licence which means that they can have a maximum of 12 events a year.

I don't expect or want them to lose their licence, but the woman at the council was extremely sympathetic to us and seemed to take it q. seriously. I've sent her a copy of my v. polite email as backup.

We'll probably have a barrage of beer bottles over the hedge now in retaliation
