Moving to new house on Monday and first council tax bill on current house due on Mon-should I cancel my dd or pay? Did not get to council office today before they shut to ask. Dont want to pay and then have to pay on new house as well!

If the payment is due on Monday it may be too late to cancel it? As the request may already have been put through - could be wrong though.

FWIW - went I went onto IS the CTB took ages to come through so I was paying it as per normal, they refunded the money I'd paid while waiting (as they back dated it to the date I applied) really quickly.

If you're moving within the local authority just ring them and tell them the new address and date of move and they'll sort it out and you won't need to set up a new DD.

If you're moving out of the authority cancel the DD at the bank (too late to do it via the council as they will already have been submitted to BACS) and ring the council tax office and tell them the details and your forwarding address. You'll probably get a standard "you've cancelled your DD" type of letter but you'll also get a final apportioned bill sent to your new address which you can just pay by whatever method you choose.

oops, just noticed the date. Monday has already happened! Still not too late to have the bank reclaim a DD payment though if you didn't get round to cancelling.

Waspie is right, you pay for the month in front and a bit extra if that makes sense as you pay for 12 months of council tax but you pay it over 10 months (no payments feb and march)

If you are on a DD and overpay, when they action your move, which is always done after the date in case of problems, then any overpayment is refunded automatically if you have moved out of the area.

If you move within the area the DD is just transferred over and the new payment plan is worked out. Or if you cancelled your DD they will transfer the credit and bill you as paying cash or cheque monthly, and usually the enclose a DD mandate.

I used to work in council tax.
