Ok so I have now stopped working( for various reasons) and we are going to exist only on dps income.
Apart from the obvious like cancelling the kids' golf lessons what other tips can you give?

Sure it's been posted before but check out Martin Lewis' site Money Saving Expert. Loads of fantastic ideas to cut expenditure, and that's before you even start the tight budgeting. Also use mysupermarket.com to work out the cheapest place to do your regular shop, downgrading options etc.

Write down what is in your freezer, we have over a months worth of meals in there

ComeOVeneer · 24/04/2009 14:26

I agree with you there CD. Only decent thing (thing ever in fact) I bought from there was a sectioned windowed wooden box to hold herbal tea bags.

Hmm
theyoungvisiter · 24/04/2009 14:32

make packed lunches for your DH.

Mine needs to spend about a fiver to feed himself if he doesn't have homemade sandwiches.

That's £25 a week, or at least £100 a month. Soon adds up.

bundle · 24/04/2009 14:47

sorry lulumama, it was today's holymoly

"A MOLE WRITES...

I know someone who went to Lulu's house when she launched her range of something-or-other, and as she was clearing up at the end she just bundled all the rubbish into her tablecloth, trilling "These Zara tablecloths are great, they're only £40 so you can just use them once and throw them away!

Lulumama · 24/04/2009 14:48

i seeeee !!! the pisstake referral was not to that bit .. was not being very arsey!

i went into zara home the other day, all very beautiful and pretty and stylish. if i bought anything, it would crawl out of my house in shame

i am more shabby chic, than chic. or maybe just shabby, dunno, i certainly don;t have a lifestyle. although my living salad is rather charming, even though it is from lidl!

mrsmike · 24/04/2009 16:42

Re money saving - I cancelled gym membership (30 quid month) and joined local running club - £25 year. Much more effective too and after initial brutal shock will stick with it.

MintyyAeroEgg · 24/04/2009 17:04

Online shop for anything that isn't fresh from ASDA. I do ours once a month.

Then you can still go to Waitrose/M&S for the nice fresh things and treats.

Drink less wine.

I find the Lidl potato salad (the one with the creme fraiche dressing), Goody muesli, tie-handle bin bags and aloe vera loo roll really top notch.

pointydog · 24/04/2009 22:53

get a list of rather dull but cheap meals and maek tehm on rotation.

get the kids to play golf down the local park.

do not go on holidays where you have ot pay for accommodation.

Stop thinking about new clothes and never go shopping.

It's all rather dreary.

Why did yo ustop work?

Swedes · 24/04/2009 23:02

Use cash and only cash. Until you get into the groove of your new budget.

LOL at the golf lessons.

pointydog · 24/04/2009 23:06

scrub golf in the park. let them play football!
