Recently became SAHM - should I be letting tax office or anyone like that know???

I had an admin job paying not much more than minimum wage when I got pregnant. I had planned to back to work after 6 months but when we looked into the financial feasibility of it all, I would basically be breaking even or (more likely) paying to go to work what with lunch, train fares etc in the city.

Anyway, what I really need to know is should I be letting government bodies know that I am not working at the moment? OH is supporting us now and we aren't entitled to anything but I am just wondering if I have to notify anyone since I won't be paying NI contributions or anything at the moment.

Sorry to ramble on - I'm not sure exactly how to ask what I need to know...

No you don't need to tell anyone but depending when you left work you might be entitled to a tax rebate.

You need to make sure you sign up with the HMRC for your home responsibilities protection. It's linked to Child Benefit so you may have signed up for it when you claimed. It covers your NI contribution gap when you are bringing up children.

Oh, Can I just hijack for a second...does this home responsibilities protection apply to SAHDs? I wonder because DH has to actually go and sign on and actively look for work as he lost his job and became a SAHD, I wonder if this cover in contribution gap due to bringing up children applies to men as well as women?

Sorry again for the hijack

I think so as it relates to children under 16. Have a look on the hmrc website.

ilovetochat · 24/04/2009 21:57

pavlov, i think it applies to the person who claims the child benefit.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 24/04/2009 21:59

ilovetochat - thanks, just gone and looked, yes we need to have dh claim cb, no problem there...cheers!

at the end of the first financial year i had a letter saying i owed tax as i had been paid car allowance etc, i told them my full earnings for the year had been maternity pay and 1 months pay and they sent me tax back as i was under the limit so its sorts itself out.

Thanks very much for the replies. I will have a look at hmrc website.
