What is a forensic psychiatric assessment?

In court today my ex was ordered to have a forensic psychological assessment before he can have any access with our kids.

Anyone got experience of this?
Or knows what it consists of?

Actually, that could be psychiatric instead of psychological! Not got it written down, solicitor told me over the phone.

A psychiatrist is a medically trained Dr who has decided to specialise in mental illness

A forensic psychiatrist specialises in working with those with mental illness who are offenders and are in the criminal system

Forensic is an adjective

  1. pertaining to, connected with, or used in courts of law or public discussion and debate.
  1. adapted or suited to argumentation; rhetorical.

So in this context a forensic psychiatric / psychological assessment is one which has been ordered by the (family) court to assist in the decision-making.

both my brother-in-law and a good friend of mine had forensic psychiatrists interview them during their divorces (completely separate matters!) to assess the individual and the access / custody matters regarding their children.

Thanks
The ex isn't sure about it, doesn't want it! He's violent. And has got worse since we split, new partner has just moved him out of her home. I just can't see how this will help with his access. He does stupid things on spur if the moment. He's unpredictable
Will I see this report?

My feeling is you won't see the report as it is, after all a medically confidential issue BUT the court will see it and can act accordingly.

I can imagine the ex isn't sure about it if he has a history of violence!

I think you will see the report as it will form part of the trial bundle at the final hearing. All expert evidence is normally disclosed to the parties.

(family lawyer btw)

Hi
We saw the report made on my cousin so you probably would see it.

GypsyMoth · 24/04/2009 21:01

Yes. Confirmed today that I will go into solicitors office to go through the report with him. Cafcass lady will also discuss it with me as she is acting as a mediator. He has tried to comit suicide many many times, once he indicated he 'could easily take the kids' so I just can't agree to unsupervised contact. I doubt this assessment will confirm my fears, don't even know what psychiatrists look for.
