Is it legal for schools to say you have to buy the uniform from them only?

I was under the impression they were not allowed to say this.

Any pointers to the right bits of government stuff appreciated.
I'm feeling militant and feel a letter to the governors coming on.

Also. apologies. am posting this in multiple topics to get as many responses as posible.

I Am Not Happy.

Private or state?
Primary or secondary?

DisasterEggs · 21/04/2009 19:49

State. Secondary.
New uniform next term. Have been told to brinmg along new pupils for uniform fitting. Blaizers between £32 and £37. Jumpers £12 to £18. Compulsory ties for boys £5. Compulsory School badge £2.
Subsidies for those on Income support.

Assuming that the badges are meant to go on the blazer I would have though you can buy anywhere then sew it on.

Many schools sell balzers already badged which for state I thnk is wrong.

So if all you have to buy is the tie and badge that is pretty good going and I wouldn't complain.

However if the whole uniform is school only then schools should be making sure that it is accesible from different sources but most don;t I'm afraid.

Sounds like a bargain to me . I am still hyperventilating after paying £100 for PE kit for my DS who hates sport...

DisasterEggs · 21/04/2009 20:07

this is as well as the PE kit which when added up comes to around £120 only available from one sport shop.

i know our school jumpers are only avilable from the school

Yes, it's legal. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to do it.

For what it's worth, I've always found uniforms to be cheaper than regular clothes for school because wearing a uniform rules out all the competitive nonsense.

And giving a discount to families on benefits represents even more value for money because if you had to wear ordinary clothes to school you wouldn't get a discount from the shop for being on benefits.

Check whether the school PTA are selling 2nd hand uniform, they usually do and often it is in good nick - certainly DS's pe kit never got much use........

Or do you know anyone around who's DC go or went to school - they may have outgrown uniform too.

There is often a sort of kudos which goes with "worn" clothes rather than the brand spanking new kit worn by the "new kids".
