when you buy a house, and you have a search done.... will it tell you if your neighbours house is council owned, or the house your buying was once council owned

this is just to settle an argument with my mum...

thanks

You can tell if a house is/was owned by the council. They are distinctive!

It won't tell you about your neighbours house by the way, it's just the house you are buying. They normally just detail the last owner so if the house was origionally a council property and has been sold a few times it doesn't normally say. It may do though, alot of properties are sold with specific 'restrictive covenants' on them which basically prevent the new owners from doing certain things like keep chickens. You can tell alot from the search in this regard but it won't specifically say.

Look at all the other houses on the road, as I say, council houses are distinctive. It shouldn't matter though but they are normally cheaper to buy, can have damp problems aswell.

we bought ours just under a year ago - and there were classifications - and a map. i can't remember the detail - so sorry, but we are within walking distance of the town centre which meant a certain classification or something.

ok that response made no sense what so ever - sorry

Thanks for clearing that up... pretty boring reason for knowing really

my cousin has a council house, near london.. all houses are terraced and look the same, the new neighbour who paid £300,000 for his house wanted to put a fence up and was talking to cousin about it, and was suprised that cousins house was council, (and presumably that his was ex council)
Mum was saying that he should have known.. when I asked why she said the solicitor should have realised when he did the searches...
don't agree... mum convinced she's right...
