How much do you spend on grocery shopping?

I only ask because we seem to over spend on our budget of £560 per month and I can't believe we actually need more than this. We have 2 DCS (1 and 3),me and DH. The kids and I are home all day so are eating 3 meals a day here. DS (aged 1) eats normal meals now rather than baby food and formula milk. By grocery shoppping I mean food, drink, cleaning stuff, washing powder, nappies, shampoo and shower gel etc. Kids clothes and shoes are separate. I was going to increase our budget to 660 which just sounds way too much to me. We shop at Tesco/Sainsbury so not Harrods!

£60 a week for me, 3 DC's and the cat.

Daisymoosteiner · 17/04/2009 14:32

£70-75 a week for 2 adults, 4 kids and 2 cats. It was £65 a week until relatively recently, but has crept up as prices have risen and kids have got bigger! It will probably be lower in the summer once we're eating home-grown stuff again.

£200 a month, 2 adults who eat big portions and 2 cats.

That includes toiletries etc as well.

Meal plan. Eat less meat. I pick recipes that have minimal ingredients.

We eat very well, don't feel like we're missing out at all.

Milk is additional, the milkman is about £17 a month iirc.

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 17/04/2009 17:14

For 2 adults, 2 dc (who eat about the same despite one being a teenager and one being only 17 months) and 2 cats- about £500 a month. I am trying to reduce this though- I recently realised that as DH eats lunch at work 3 times a week and ds1 has £2.50 per day for school lunch AND we eat out once a week (and sometimes takeaway once too ) that I must be seriously doing something wrong.

It's not even like I don't make my own stuff from scratch or use leftovers, either.

I've recently started doing my shopping online (Tesco's) and it seems to be helping (a bit).

shinyshoes · 17/04/2009 17:20

family of 5 (me and dh, 12, 8 and 15 mo). around £450-500.

My cousin has her (16, 13, 9 ) and does it for £200.00

on MSE there was someone doing it for £20.00 a week or £50.00 a month or something like that. They bloody did it too

norksinmywaistband · 17/04/2009 17:21

£30-40 a week, only extra is milk( but vouchers we get for DS cover that)
That is for everything for me and 2 DC

shinyshoes · 17/04/2009 17:26

Yep it was 'feed a family of four for £20.00 a month'

diedandgonetodevon · 17/04/2009 17:28

2 adults, 6mo DS, dog & cat
£125-ish a week plus extra bits in the week that I forgot to order.

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 17:29

£200 per week for 2 adults and 3 kids, one still in nappies. I think it's a bit high if I'm honest. Lots of unecessary rubbish in there + some booze so I know where I should cut back. Really need to sort it out.

feedthegoat · 17/04/2009 17:30

We spend £100 per week for me, dh and ds (3) though we probably spend at least another £120 a month on eating out on top of this.

shinyshoes · 17/04/2009 17:34

oh yes takeaways and eating out another £150. maybe on top of that

norksinmywaistband · 17/04/2009 17:36

Did they list what they ate shiny, I find it hard to believe there was much fresh food for that price

muggglewump · 17/04/2009 17:39

1 adult, 1 child and I spend £100 per month on all shopping.
I've just gone back to benefits after losing my job so have a small amount of savings to fall back on but it is for dire emergencies only.
I buy value everything but try to stick in sauces (soy/fish/worcester) and herbs and spices so I can make a tasty meal from the value stuff.
I don't do food ethics, I buy anything we can and will enjoy.

If some value stuff is crap I mix with the own brand (half and half for washing powder for example), and I have nice dispensers (bought from Poundland) for the value shower gel and shampoo.

Farmfoods are great for brand names if you want them, and they do 9 rolls of lotion loo roll for £2 so not just food, they also sell milk for £1 for 4 litres. It's the same milk as anywhere else!

I've got used to it, yes it's tedious and boring but it really does save once you get used to it.

mrsmaidamess · 17/04/2009 17:49

£80 a week for 2 adults , 3 children and a rabbit.

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 17:57

You've put me to shame, Mugggle.

Especially, the milk thing. I'm ashamed to admit that I have no idea if that is cheap for milk and couldn't even begin to guess at how much 4pints of milk cost.
I'm actually feeling quite stupid and removed now.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 17/04/2009 18:01

£400 for me, DH, three children aged 11, 9, 6 and two cats.
I do an online shop of £100 once a fortnight and spend £50 a week at the butcher and greengrocer on meat, fruit, veg etc.
I cook everything from scratch, do a lot of baking and use the slow cooker a lot for cheaper cuts of meat etc.
I reckon I could manage on £300 if I absolutely had to, which may be soon if DH's work doesn't pick up.

Pwsimerimew · 17/04/2009 18:06

£125 a week, 2 adults, 2 DC,3 cats. Have sat down last week to try to sort out our finances, so hopefully, things will improve. Good tips btw.

myredcardigan · 17/04/2009 18:06

You see, I'd love to cook more from scratch but am too exhausted most days. Having 3 children under 5 and a husband who works 12 or 13 hour days shatters me. I know other women do it, wish I could.

FlyMeToDunoon · 17/04/2009 18:08

2 adults, 3 children eating regular meals [in a picky way],3 cats.
I do a two weekly shop ont internet from Sainsbury's and spend around £130-150 includes 2 bottles of wine

Top up by around £50 so thats £85-95 a week

Having baked potatoes tonight with tuna
Many pasta meals
Bulk cook mince and freeze
Own brand stuff
Basics
Omelettes
Packed lunches for DD1

Pollyanna · 17/04/2009 18:11

£170 a week for 3 adults, 5 children, 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs.

We meal plan, cook from scratch, have 2 meat free meals a week, not much chicken, and one lot of packed lunches. I only buy organic meat though and that is pricy, but not much booze.

Am going to try lidl, but generally only do internet shopping. I must try Frogs' tips - we could do with reducing our spend on food.

claireybee · 17/04/2009 18:21

2 Adults, 2 dc (2.10 and 16 months)
£120ish a month on big shop
Another £60ish a month top up shop
£10ish a week on bread, milk, veg top ups

Sometimes it's more because all my basics seem to run out at the same time but othertimes I don't need to top up so it probably works out the same.

Don't buy nappies or baby food/milk though

claireybee · 17/04/2009 18:23

Oh yes I didn't include wine, thats another £75 every 3 months

TrillianAstra · 17/04/2009 18:23

£50 a week for 2 adults.

LoveBeingAMummy · 17/04/2009 21:16

2 adults and a 1yr old.

£80-120 per week depending on what getting, I do tend to stock up on offers and could probabyl live out of the freezer and cupboards for a good 3 weeks or more.
