Dp is debt ridden with his credit cards. If he was to sign over the house to me , so that the house is in my name only , and then file for bankruptcy..... would we lose our home. The credit cards are in his name only.

Apologies if msg isn't making a lot of sense

Sorry, a bankruptcy would go through everything, even look at who the deeds to the house belong to, when they were signed over etc, if there's a very short time delay they would take this rather severely so it would not be good. They would know that this has been done because of the bankruptcy so they would do something about the house.
You do need specialist advice from either the CAB or another debt counsellor rather then on here. The CAB would be a better place for help.

You may need CAB but also a solicitors and accouontants advice before you do anything.

It's OK. I'm sorry that this is how it is. I'm guessing this isn't what you want to hear. After a bankruptcy hearing an insolvency practitioner will go through everything with a tooth comb, looking at exaclty what comes in and what goes out. They have the authority to request payments from your family and friends, anyone who has paid something on your behalf and then you have repaid. It's really not an easy option.
There are things like IVA's that you should really look into first. I know that the government have just brought something out similar to bankruptcy for people on low incomes but is less severe. The CAB can advise you alot better. They also (IIRC) are one of the few places that are able to get interest on any debts you have frozen. I really do suggest you go to them.

You should be able to stay in the family home for at least 12 months after bankrupcy and may be able to buy his hare of the house for a nominal sum.

Someone I know has recently been though bankruptcy and have managed to keep their house as there was little/no equity in the property.
