Is it best to collect nectar points or Tesco points?

We are thinking of swapping credit cards; does anyone know which is better value for money, collecting Nectar or Tesco points?

Many thanks

i'd go with nectar. but only because I can't stand tesco.
and you can collect them in more places and redeem them on more stuff i reckon. but i could be wrong

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/04/2009 20:05

Well I hate Tesco and never shop there but if you are looking at it from cold hard facts, the better deal is the Clubcard points, four times value on Tesco Deals days out and whatnot. You have to spend approximately a million pounds in Sainsburys to get an Alton Towers ticket.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/04/2009 20:07

depends where you shop?
And which tesco credit card you have - the old ones give better points than the new ones, so if you already have one keep it (unused) in case you want to go back to it.

Do Nectar do deals in the came way as Clubcard?

BottySpottom · 11/04/2009 20:11

We shop at Sainsburys usually. In terms of collecting nectar points, presumably we can get those on our usual nectar card - it's just which credit card we use in addition (I wonder if we go through the nectar website to purchase from Play, for example, and pay with a Tesco card?).

It's the days out I'm really interested in. I reckon when we are well and truly credit crunched, we'll have few of those.

if you already collect nectar points then surely it makes sense to collect more of them, than to start collecting another lot of something different then?/
i dunno :S

BottySpottom · 11/04/2009 20:59

I don't know this is - is there a kind of culmulative effect? I mean, are 100 points worth more than twice as much as 50?

I plan to buy everything on credit card and then through on line banking adjust which accounts spending was meant to have come from. Hoping we can get days out etc from both.

well no but if you had 1000 nectar points and 1000 tesco ones you might not be able to get much

but 2000 of one or the other might.

iyswim?

happywomble · 11/04/2009 21:16

I collect Nectar points (on nectar card not credit card) as I hate Tescos! You can collect Nectar points at BP garages as well as Sainsburys and other places. Must say have been collecting for some time and am probably no where near a ticket to legoland.

Nothing will make me shop at Tescos though!

I have thousands of nectar points. I collected them myself. Not entirely sure what to do with them. Will I get a presentation folder soon? Shall I dust them?

What am I supposed to do with them?

thisisyesterday · 11/04/2009 21:24

spend them showofhands!

I have to admit I HATE the nectar website and find it really annoying to use.
we usually just spend ours on shopping now and then, or for something from argos.l
(ie, when my buggy broke when I was out shopping once I Had enough points for a whole new one!)

Ponders · 11/04/2009 21:26

Tesco points are far better value I'm sorry to say, & they have so many more alternative thing to use them on.

Nectar points are basically face value

Ponders · 11/04/2009 21:28

I keep my Tesco vouchers in an envelope on the pinboard in the kitchen with DO NOT USE on the front & a running total of actual & 4x face value. It's very encouraging

Ponders · 11/04/2009 21:29

(I've got 30,000 Nectar points, & have yet to find anything I want to do with them but I've already had an Irish Ferries crossing & a Eurotunnel trip with Tesco & still have loads left to use)

BottySpottom · 11/04/2009 21:30

Happywomble - I'm not talking about shopping at Tesco - I'm talking about their credit card, which earns you points to spend in or out of shop.

Ohhh - if you're not going to shop at Tesco then their card isn't a good deal at all. You'd be better off with American Express or Egg or something which give c 1% cashback; the Tesco card only gives you 1 point per £4 spend outside Tesco.

You get 5 points per £4 shopping in Tesco (& double points on fuel the last few times I went, which = 5p off a litre if you use the points on deals)

No idea about a Nectar credit card.

BottySpottom · 11/04/2009 21:57

Thanks Ponders. Got it all wrong then!

Thisis - I see your point. I had thought I'd be spending enough to earn lots on both, but maybe not

Example of how not-very-good-value Nectar points are: I've got nearly 30,000, which are worth c £150 at face value - I just checked out the website & found I could have eg a Eurostar ticket for from 14,000 points (or £70 face value), but you can buy one for from £55; with Clubcard points on Eurotunnel you just pay the going rate in deals tokens.

I know Sainsburys give 2 points per £ spent, but they're still less than half as good value as Clubcard points. I'll probably end up spending them at Argos or somewhere!

blueshoes · 12/04/2009 11:53

I have a Nectar card because I shop regularly at Sainsbo. It is not very good value. It works out to about 1% discount ie every £100 I spend gives me £1 off at my next shop at Sainsbo. But you can get triple points with a £70 shop and other points deals.

Fizzylemonade · 13/04/2009 13:20

I have just posted on another thread about tesco.

I do not shop at tesco but I have a tesco credit card. I shop at sainsburys so get nectar points and I redeem these either in sainsburys or argos. Everyone seems to have stopped doing nectar points now and I think they are crap.

Tesco on the other hand gives you 4 times the face value so I buy my £200 RAC cover with a £50 clubcard voucher.

They send you paper clubcard vouchers but I just put the details in on-line for whatever I want, you don't have to send them off, they then send me a ticket in the post.

Days out are fab as a trip to legoland for an adult on-line ticket is £32.40 and a child is £24.30 so 2 adults and 2 children is £113.40!!! It would cost me £9.50 per person with a clubcard voucher so only £38. Huge difference and it isn't actually costing me any money.

I also do magazine subscriptions, restaurants, weekend breaks on clubcard vouchers.

There is a 2 year expiry date on the voucher which is plenty of time to spend it in.

I bought a very nice white gold diamond ring with my vouchers when they were about to expite

Fizzylemonade · 13/04/2009 13:20

Expite? Err I obviously meant expire.

MrsJamin · 13/04/2009 13:40

DH and me are going to New York with our Nectar points! So they are flipping worth doing. Nectar points flights link

Ponders · 13/04/2009 14:47

My 30,000 Nectar points have a face value of £150 & I've yet to find a deal on the Nectar website that improves on that (in fact generally they're worth less in deals)

£150 in Tesco points is worth £600 in deals. No contest for me!
