SHC Collections Ltd donations - charity or scam ?

We've had at least 3 leaflets through our door this year from this company claiming to collect unwanted clothes, toiletries etc to supply the Third World (implying they aren't given for free and are "graded" in UK with no charity number quoted ).

Googling suggests they may be only just above board , anyone know for sure if it is a scam or not ? Wouldn't want to give away stuff on one basis only for it to go on ebay and line someone's pockets

I don't know that company but there seems to be loads which involve some kind of selling.

Only give to charities you're comfortable with.

Don't you get inundated with "proper" chartiy bags? We get one a week. Drives me mad.

I don't know that specific one, but there are lots that are just a business and not a charity - I'd stick to ones which have a charity number if you want to be sure.

This organisation is definitely a business and with dubious charity links, most likely sails just within the law and relying on the generous nature of honest folk.
Their registered company address says it all!!

Do not support them but report them to local trading standards

There are lots of these firms around - I seem to get bags/fliers through the doors almost every week. Some promise to give a certain amount per tonne weight to a charity, others say that they resell in the third world. There was a documentary a couple of years ago which showed all this stuff being sold in markets in Uganda (including old bras) and the bad effect it has had on the indigenous clothing industry.

SueW · 25/05/2009 10:39

I dump all such plastic bags/leaflets in thebin/recycling and take clothing to a local charity shop (not the closest one, it has to be said, but the one that you can park right outside so easily drop a carload)

Most charities will happily collect from you, any unwanted goods. Just ring the nearest shop and organise direct, they will be happy to collect one bag or ten bags. There is a large shortage of donated goods at the moment, so whatever you have will be well received.

This people collecting or sometime snatching from charities are SELLING they stuff collected here back in Eastern European countries in they second hand shops for money.
They businesses taking advantage of the British people generous nature.
You are better off taking your staff down to your local charity shop.
They advertising they shops as "quality second hand English cloths"
DONT GIVE THEM< GIVE TO PEOPLE REALLY NEED IT!!

hajni · 26/01/2010 16:27

and the donations are ending up in germany, hungary, slovakia etc countries not in eastern europe and in the EU....
