Help Don't know if I have had fraud perpetrated on my debit card

Bit of a dilemma re: debit card. I had a debit card payment of £360 show up on my bank a/c to the Royal Mail, now for the life of me I do not know what that is for, even after racking my brains I'm sure I didn't spend that money so, have informed bank and it is now back in my a/c and is under investigation.
Now I have received a form stating That all this is true and it will go to the police. But I still have a niggle that I should know what this is. Am I going mad or is this genuine card fraud? Have I really spent £360 on something and genuinely forgotten on what.
Am scared because I have asked for more details on who this payment went to and what for but have had no response so can't say something like 'oh yeah it was ...' So if I sign this form saying I think it's fraud then I get details and do end up saying 'oh yeah...' Will I be prosecuted or something?

Could it be an insurance renewal?

mamas12 · 27/03/2009 00:05

Just did new policy which would only add up to £165 so even if they processed it twice it still doesn't add up does it.

You used to write cheques to post office Counters Ltd for euros etc - is it for foreign currency ? But is a lot of money - think you would probably remember - don't feel bad about asking for further info - you're being vigilant ...!!

mamas12 · 27/03/2009 00:11

No currency, can't afford to go anywhere. But who else can I ask for more details - the bank, Royal Mail themselves?

You must have sent an enormous parcel for that price

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 27/03/2009 00:14

You won't be prosecuted if you suddenly realise that you did spend it on whatever. They'll just think you're a prat.

mamas12 · 27/03/2009 00:14

I would sent myself on hols for that price!

Oh good oldlady, I think I can live with being thought a prat because at the moment I think I could be,or not, I am so confused. But not being prosecuted (for being a prat) is good news.

they should give you a copy of the transaction slip - my mum had one of these recently and the transaction slip was signed - not her signature not even her name - if is a chip and pin transaction then the bank will be able to tell you when and where - that could show debit made in birmingham when you live in London for instance - then you could challenge that eg. I work 200 miles away so couldn't have made transaction - don't be bullied just keep at them ...

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 27/03/2009 00:19

They'll want the money back, though, so don't spend it till you're sure you haven't already, iyswim.

mamas12 · 27/03/2009 00:22

Thanks wrongside I will ring bank tommorrow and try and get to the bottom of it . It's all happened so fast, reassuring if it is a fraud. They only told me that it was an internet transaction.

'Royal Mail' and 'Post Office Counters Ltd' are separate organisations these days. So Royal Mail is basically sending things by post: much harder to forget sending someone half a ton of ... (whatever). If you just fill in the form with your best recollection, and some better reminder of the (whatever) emerges from the process, then tell all concerned as soon as you know the information you provided was wrong: no offence has been committed

mamas12 · 27/03/2009 00:29

I definitely have not sent anyone anything through the post using the Royal Mail, but do they have other companies doing other things that might show up as Royal mail?

I've raised an investigation on a transaction that turned out to be one I'd genuienly made over the internet! The company I'd paid with the debit card took ages to process the payment so it didn't show up on my statement for nearly three months - by which time I didn't recognise it. I had signed the form saying I think its fraud, they processed it and gave me the money back; then took the money back off me when it all got worked out (they told me all the details and it eventually dawned on me that it was me). Yes I felt a bit of a prat; and yes I got all the cards on the account cancelled and new ones issued and all of that chaos (its a business account, so four of us have cards).

Noone ever formally told me off for it though... and I'd still do the same today - if there's anything slightly dodgy looking on the account I'd cancel everything immediately and start an investigation as a precaution even if I risk looking like a prat later!

mamas12 · 27/03/2009 18:50

Thanks ditzzy that was exactly what I was envisioning good to know to do that is ok and not so 'end of the world'
God mumsnet is good
Money back in my account so we'll just and see.

If Royal Mail is just sending stuff by post, it's a bizarre thing to have committed a fraudulent transaction on (or even a genuine one!)

blushingm · 28/03/2009 20:35

sounds silly but could it be a 36p stamp that they've charged you wrong ?

mamas12 · 28/03/2009 23:04

That would be an explanation. But I didn't pay for a stamp on my debit card.
Soupdragon have you your thread back it mad me lol. Royal mail sending things through post.

could it be that?

mamas12 · 30/03/2009 11:09

I would love to know what else Royal Mail do. No it's not pet insurance. Thanks for thinking though
