If theyve already agreed to give you what you asked for on your part-ex.

Or in this climate should you be able to go for it and hope for the best.

The car is for sale at £9995, they have offered me £5500 for my car and I want to buy the new one for £9500. AIBU??

no, they expect people to haggle, it's part and parcel of their job

No - always haggle and try and get as much discount as you can, or at least extras thrown in. Even with new cars, unless it has a waiting list and sought after, there are dicounts to be had.

mosschops30 · 13/03/2009 13:26

Its not new though, its a used car, and I know you can get good bargains with brand new ones at the moment, but not so sure about the used car market (which is apparently doing pretty well)!

He had the nerve to ask me to give him a £1000 deposit to 'hold' the car until I can view it tomorrow. and this is a main dealer!!!!

I would always haggle if I was buying a car.

georgiemum · 13/03/2009 13:39

Go for it. If you are lucky they will be close to month/quarter/year end and keen to make the sale!!!

HeinzSight · 13/03/2009 13:41

Absolutely haggle, especially nowadays!! Agree with goergiemum, it's coming up to the yr end, they may be desperate to get their sales figures up.

mosschops30 · 13/03/2009 13:42

yeah I guess end of March is pretty much as near end as you get

I think Im typically British in that I find it uncomfortable asking for money off stuff

you don't ask you don't get I say

georgiemum · 13/03/2009 14:09

We got a bit off our last car and some nice little extras for nothing. What's the worst they can say 'no, and we won't sell you the car'???

deckchair · 13/03/2009 14:50

I ask for money off all the time.

Last time I bought a car, I walked out of the dealership as they said no. They rang me the next day and agreed...
Go for it.

MsSpentYouth · 13/03/2009 14:57

Yes, you have to be prepared to walk out if they say no.

And if they promise yu stuff then don't give it to you, don't take it, many do.

NorbertDentressangle · 13/03/2009 15:01

Definitely haggle a bit -they expect it.

Also ask for extras like a new set of mats or say things like "I take it, it will come with a full tank of petrol"

I tried this when I went with my Mum to buy her car as she wouldn't have the nerve to ask. Normally I wouldn't have the nerve either but felt it was my duty as a daughter!

(it worked BTW)

mosschops30 · 13/03/2009 15:28

He has just rung me to say that it doesnt have a cd player and asked if it would be a problem, and I said yes as its 2009 and i dont know if they still even make cassettes

At least I have a bargaining tool now

I am not desparate for this car, dont need it right now, so am prepared to walk out if i dont get what I want.
