I'm in tears as did my tax return online in time, saved it and printed it. Then got a £100 fine today. I have just looked online to find I never actually clicked 'submit' on the bloody thing! I owe no tax btw. What can I do?

if you don't owe anything at 31 Jan 09 (ie you didn't owe or it was paid by that date) then the penalty should be reduced to nil. Ring them up and complain.

From HMRC site.
If you or your client pay any tax that they owe by 31 January 2009, the late filing penalty will be reduced to nil. This is called 'capping'. It is a longstanding arrangement designed to encourage prompt payment even by those that file late. We are keeping this arrangement for now as a 'safety net' for customers who inadvertently miss the paper deadline because they had not yet realised that the dates had changed. But this law is under review and there is no guarantee that the arrangement will be available after this year, so it makes sense to get into (and get your clients into) good filing habits now.

If you don't owe any tax, you won't have a fine. Just send in a printed copy of your return.

I was 'raided' by HMRC a few years ago (phone call at 7am) telling me that I hadn't filed a return for the previous 3 years (I was a SAHM and didn't earn a bean, and didn't know I needed to file a return). I was gutted at the thought of the fines plus interest, but all was fine okay.

Hey don't panic. I got a £100 fine in the post this week. I was straight on the phone because the authorization code to activate the self assessment did not arrive before 31 Jan. I filed my assessment five days late and after speaking to someone at hmrc they said I would not be fined.

Anyway they then tried to pin a £600 back payment on me when I had left the uk in August 2007. A quick conversation with the customer services dept saw thecehole amount wiped.

Call them.
