Otherwise, I would have to apply for new photo license. Please let me know if anybody has experienced this. Thank you.

I think if you use an international chain (Hertz, Avis etc) you need both parts. I would call the company to check.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/03/2009 14:58

Pretty sure that you need both parts now.

cyphercat · 10/03/2009 18:01

what do you mean by both parts..?? I have pink and green one. Do you think I would need photo ID?

You need the photo part of the license aswell as the green part.

Cyphercat do you mean that you have the all-in-one old-style license because I still have that too as haven't moved for years or had any endorsements. I was wondering the same thing about driving on the Continent (and further afield as we are going to Australia/NZ in December). Maybe we should contact the DVLA, although even if it is still valid there may come a point when no-one will accept it?

I am not sure about needing the newer photo licence to hire a car in Spain, but you do need it for Australia and New Zealand and the USA. Do you know it is very easy to apply for it online if you have a current passport. I did it for my DH about 18 months ago they apply to the Passport Office and are able to use the photo off your passport. If I remember rightly it was back with us in a week can't remember how much it cost maybe about £19.

hmmm.. interesting. I didn't get anywhere but I'm thinking of applying anyway because it seems safer. Let me know if you do find out anything for sure. I do have all in one old style license - green and pink one.

I've used my old green one every year to hire cars. Younger staff look a bit bemused, but I have my passport as back up.
