This is slightly 'tongue in cheek' but if we anticipate a depression rather than a recession, what would be sensible things to do? - could people Zombie Plans have practical use?

If we anticipate a depression rather than a recession, what would be sensible things to do?

Stock piling food seems a little extreme (& obviously food in the freezer is not the way to go as we often had power cuts in the 70's)

Would spreading your finances over several banks be advisable? Or is any bank better than the others?

Should we pay off debt or save any spare cash as debt may become meaningless? If we save spare money do we do this as cash/money in the bank/diamonds or something else?

Are there elements of the ever present 'Zombie Plans' which float around MN on a regular basis which would actually have a real use

As I said this is slightly 'tongue in cheek' but what would you do?

Hasn't thoughtto stockpile tea & coffee - Thanks for the idea

Wine might be a good idea too

As you say all these could be currency

Making our own clothes too - shoes are a bit beyond me so they are an item to cherish

Tortington · 24/02/2009 10:48

i'm off to sally strawberries house - if you think about it - with her camping equipment and excellent cooking skills, i am sure she could mke me a veritable feast every night.

i shall bring the vodka

snigger · 24/02/2009 10:51

I shall mainly be organising some sort of dynamo power for my laptop - I may have to be a hobo, but I shall be an informed hobo.

Astrophe · 24/02/2009 10:52

katmac - not planning on knitting shoes, but rather stocking up on them!

Tent - check.
torches - ckeck (must get batteries)
knitting needles - check.

Maybe a sheep to produce the wool to knit the pants? Or maybe people go pants-less during depressions? I'm not sure of the ettiquette...

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 24/02/2009 10:53

that you don't think zombie plans have any real use!!!!!!

Astrophe · 24/02/2009 10:58

Do you think its also worth forming a gang with other local forward thinking individuals in order to fend off the inevitable looters and marauders? We could arrange to barter goods with them (knitted pants, onions, nettle soup, green and blacks chocolate etc) depending on each individuals particular frugality specialisation.

WouldYouCouldYouWithAGoat · 24/02/2009 10:58

i am just going to eat the zombies

Astrophe · 24/02/2009 11:02

wouldyoucouldyou - how will you kill them? Aren't they allergic to holy water or something?

( mental note: must lay in a stock of holy water)

Astrophe · 24/02/2009 11:03

Is 'Zombie' just a euphamism for "disillusioned stockbroker" btw?

DaisyMooSteiner · 24/02/2009 11:12

Nooo - don't eat your daffodil bulbs, they're terribly poisonous!

KatyMac · 24/02/2009 13:28

Can you eat Tulip bulbs then?

OP posts:
wombleprincess · 24/02/2009 13:41

re tulip bulbs...they lived! once had a knitted swimming costume. it was rubbish..really hope things dony get that bad

KatyMac · 24/02/2009 18:30

Will tea/coffee/wine or chocolate be the currency of depression Britain?

Will we all die eating tulip or daffodil bulbs?

Will we have razor wire round our allotments & chicken coops?

OP posts:
Astrophe · 25/02/2009 01:52

maybe Boden voucher will be the depression currency?

I'm seriously buying the odd thing in next sizes up for the children, to be on the safe side, inflation is my prediction in which case both debt and savings become worthless.
I also have a vegetable patch ;-)

DaDaDa · 27/02/2009 00:11

I have become worryingly interested in 'doom'. This is current favourite doom-monger. If you stock up on food what's the worst that can happpen? You eat it.

Mind you, a lot of the really bad stuff housepricecrash members predicted on a macro-economic scale has come to pass. They're right about house prices too (just jumped a couple of years early.) Too many right wing libertarian crazies on there though.

KatyMac · 27/02/2009 21:19

'Doom & Gloom, Doom & Gloom' what is that a quote from?

A touring caravan. You need a caravan. And lots of bottled gas.
I have had my caravan ready for six years now and we've been using it in the meantime for lots of holidays.
I intend to leave in the dead of night with caravan and kids, a trailer full of calor gas and a few tonnes of tea bags and bouquet garni bags. They'll be very useful for rat
/cat/squirrel/roadkill casseroles.

springlamb · 27/02/2009 21:42

And fags, we shall need fags.

KatyMac · 27/02/2009 21:48

Well if world transport breaks down you would have to grow your own (if you can get seeds)

OP posts:
springlamb · 27/02/2009 21:57

Katy, you can grow your own fags?
Well I know you can grow a certain type of fag, but I don't think it would be wise to get stoned whilst hiding out in a caravan in the woods with the dc. I may have to protect them from ravaging hordes trying to steal my bouquet garni.
Also, if I'm stoned I might drop said fag too near the calor gas stockpile and - whoosh.

KatyMac · 27/02/2009 21:59

What d you think they make them out of?

The Tobacco plant.....Is that the same as Nicotiana (sp?)
