Hiya... i know this is off the general topics in here, but getting desperate here. My DH has just been refused car insurance, but we have no idea why, as he has done nothing wrong, and made no claims. Does anyone know who he can call to discuss this?
Thanks

It might just be the car he's trying to insure. DH tried to change his car with his existing insurance company a couple of weeks ago. Because his new car is an automatic they refused to insure it, if it had been a manual they would have insured it no problem

starzzz · 19/02/2009 11:27

Its the same car he has had insurance on for the past two years, no changes to it or anything.

i had problems insuring mine because it was over 30 yrs old! some will refuse if car has been modified too
all sorts of reasons.

just go with someone else

thisisyesterday · 19/02/2009 11:28

well, didn't he ask them then??

starzzz · 19/02/2009 11:34

He got the quotes online using various compare websites - then when he clicks buy, it says he has been refused, on all of them. He has called one of them to ask why, and they just say they dont know.

He was sent a renewal form from his current insurance company, but it had gone up alot (as they do) so he wants to get it cheaper. Dont want to phone his existing company as he is worried this will raise whatever the problem is with them too, and they will then refuse him IYKWIM.

The car is only 2 years old, was from a hire company but he has now bought it fully, no money owed on it. No modifications.

well, he has to do something and talk to someone as he cannot drive without insurance

i would start by speaking to his current insurers and hopefully get to the bottom of it

it might be a mistake somewhere

has he any fines/convictions/driving offenses.. is it taxed etc?

starzzz · 19/02/2009 11:42

We are worried if we speak to his current insurance they will refuse him as well.

No nothing to cause it, no fines, convictions etc, nothing has changed at all in the last year - thats why its so odd.

but if he has been refused by everyone else and can;t renew with current insurers, he can;t drive.

he has to pick up the phone, it is bound to be a simple mistake somewhere

BennyAndSwoon · 19/02/2009 11:47

It may have been a problem on the website?

He really needs to call them

He can call his current insurer and say he has seen some cheaper quotes. See what they say

QuintessentialShadows · 19/02/2009 11:58

The current company wont refuse to insure him. All they can do is to put the premium up. Usually they do this if there has been any claim within the last three years. Maybe there is something about the car your dh is not telling you?

I had an accident where a skip hire truck swerved and overtook me in the inside lane. The skip drivers version was that I had hit him from behind, whereas I could see what he did, as he rammed me on the drivers side as he swerved out. The cost of repairs were astronomical, and we had a courtesy car for 2 weeks, as it fractured the engine.

As he lied about what happened (possibly because he did not look in the mirror as he swerved and could therefore not see me, he might not have seen what happened) and his insurance company did not believe me, it went to the lawyers, and they decided we had to share the blame. I had protected my no claims bonus, but the insurance company decided that I was to blame, and the put a "note" in my records. I wanted to insure with a different company when my insurance was up, but couldnt as nobody would insure me. This "note" had been distributed to all insurance companies, so nobody would insure me. But, as they were my current insurers, they were by law obliged to keep insuring me. (In addition to this, our window had been smashed by a "maraudering teenager", and I had a very intimate encounter with a column in Sainsbos carpark. This three incidents within a 5 year period was enought to make a "note" on my account.)

Your dh has to call his current insurance company and sort it out.

sorry about writing such a long essay

janinlondon · 19/02/2009 12:01

Get him to call one of the companies from the website and apply on the phone. They will then tell him where the problem lies. Do not call current insurer.

starzzz · 19/02/2009 12:02

Thanks for all the advice - i have passed it on to him.

QES - i have "notes" on mine too.. but it has never really affected my insurance much, thats why we find it so suprising. If he had done something and not told me about it (i dont think he would do this) then he wouldnt tell me about the problems he is having now either as they would be related.

I simply think its any error somewhere, but there is nobody to phone and ask. Oh well.. will have to see if his insurance company are any the wiser.

Go to a broker. They will get him a good policy and tell him what the problem is.

blushingm · 20/02/2009 18:47

it's prob just a fault on the comparison website. Can happen whn the links to the insurers go down

Go to an insurers own website and quote instead

lowenergylightbulb · 21/02/2009 13:28

Is he wanting to pay monthly or pay his insurance all in one go? If there's anything 'not good' on a credit file then some insurances companies will turn you down for the pay monthly scheme.

Also, when getting quotes a search of your credit file is made leaving foot prints. The more comparision sites you visit, the more footprints there are and that can reduce your credit score.

I'd phone a round a few companies TBH rather than do it online.

brettgirl2 · 22/02/2009 14:17

I wonder if this is wider than insurance - because as someone says your credit score affects it.

If he thinks his credit rating should be OK then I hate to say it but is there a possibility that his identity is being used by someone else?

risingstar · 22/02/2009 21:25

If he has a licence, the Association of British Insurers will find him an insurer to quote. They will not say how much the quote has to be. I echo what others say though, it must be a problem with his credit file. Are you sure he is putting the right info on? Sometimes we can't see our own typos ( like putting yourself in as 84 instead of 44!). Even if it is a credit issue, you should be able to pay outright by Credit card for a year's cover, or take out a short term policy by phone whilst it gets sorted
