Hypothetical question (I hope) about who would have to pay..................

for a new microwave if my new one goes "bang".

I'm renting privately. When I moved in an electrician came round because one of the sockets in the kitchen wasn't working (was apparently something to do with the fuse for that circuit in the fusebox as some of the other things that circuit controls weren't working either).

Anyhow, he "fixed" it, and off he went. I duly plugged my microwave in and used it that evening to warm DS3's milk up. The following morning DS1 opened the microwave door and it went "bang" - and died. I tried it in the other (working) sockets the other side of the kitchen and it was dead. It had tripped the fuse so I flicked it back on.

Now since then (nearly 2 weeks ago) I've not used the socket that the microwave had been plugged into. I have also bought a new microwave - which is plugged into the working socket at the otherside of the kitchen. Been in there about a week and no problems.

However, I want to move the microwave back over to where the "fixed" socket is.....however I'm worried that it's going to go "bang" and die on me.It could well be that it was just the microwave, wasn't that old (about 1 1/2-2yrs iirc) , but was a cheap(ish) one and we've had a history of short lived microwaves, in the old house, which was purely down to the machines - not the electrics - so could just be I've had back luck again.

If that happened (it went bang and died) , and it turns out that it's a dodgy socket who would be liable to replace my microwave??? It was the landlords electrician that came out to sort the socket that wasn't previously working.........

Landlord if it's the socket's fault, which it surely would be after th death of 2 machines!

i would contact the landlord before trying the microwave in the socket , they have a responsibility to ensure that those sort of things are fixed and not dangerous. in the meantime i wouldnt plug anything in it as you know it isnt properly working.

FAQinglovely · 15/02/2009 21:47

well I don't know that it's not working properly - it's just that my microwave (and I have an AWFUL history with microwaves, I think I've owned about 6 (including the newest one) in the last 4yrs !) died the morning after plugging it in the night before.......it could well be that it was my microwave that was at fault.....

ah right, get ya now, well it would do no harm to have the socket tested, you could explain what happened to landlord and ask them to have someone test it. other wise i would just continue using the other socket, you wouldnt want anything happening to children.

FAQinglovely · 15/02/2009 22:03

yea think I'll do that in the morning, electrician is due to come back at some point anyhow as one of the sockets in my bedroom is broken (well the casing of it) and he didn't have any spare socket covers with him.

I'm not too concerned about the children - it's my new microwave I'm worried about lol.
