Bank charges

I am sat here stunned about how much banks can charge you for going over your planned overdarft limit. DH's wages didn't make it into our bank account, god knows where they are but we were on holiday at the time so didn't realise. We went £271 over our o/d limit and Lloyds has charged us £280.

I used to work there and that really doesn't sound right - unless things have changed dramatically in 5 years! Is the charge made up of many elements or one big charge. It used to be £35 for a returned DD and about the same for going OD. I wonder if they returned some of your DD's, charged you then charged you for going OD on top!?!

They charged £20 for a returned SO and the rest they just seemed to heap on. I will go in on Monday and see what they say because that is excessive.

Additionally, they can only charge you a proportionate charge under law. Several people have challenged the banks over their charges, none of them ever let it get as far as court as the banks know they'll lose. If you see an account manager and ask them to justify each charge, they won't be able to and you can argue a case for a reduction or removal of the charges.

Thanks for your help.

I thought a bank could only charge you £99 in a calendar month.

I phoned the other month about some charges that were IMO wrong and they gave me the money back.

I have a friend who is really good at this stuff. She has phoned banks for several friends who have been in similar situations and got the charges revoked with full appologies. she stresses what a good customer they have been over the years and through a genuine mistake/error they have incurred such chrges. Really never fails. think banks only do this because they think they can get away with it
GOOD LUCK

TBH banks charge what they say they charge when you open the account. They make the charges when people go overdrawn without agreement or do not have enough money to pay DD's & SO's. When they refund it is a customer service gesture, especially if it is a genuine mistake, like wages not going in on time.

tinkisluvingbeingamummyagain · 04/02/2009 13:14

my bank charged me today £28 for going over by £5.40 i made an internet purchase and didnt realise that there wasnt enough money in my account

kyrasmummy · 04/02/2009 14:47

I got charge £60 for going overdrawn by £10, rang up in the reduced the charge to £30 still hurt though.

frazzled74 · 04/02/2009 14:48

last month one of my dd was returned unpaid because i was £1.80 short. i was charged £38 for the returned dd and then another £28 for being over my overdraft limit. It was my fault, but a bit unfair i feel

Minxie1977 · 04/02/2009 15:17

Some banks don't charge unless you go £10 or over your OD limit - it is worth checking your banks policy and challenging it via an account manager, especially if you have a good credit rating and have banked there a while.

Have found its always worth visiting your branch if you can. Face to face they seem more reasonable to refund than if you write to them or speak on the phone to the call centre especially if its not a regular occurance.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 11/02/2009 14:28

Just revisiting to say thank you for your help. Went to my branch who agreed that it was alot and they weren't impressed by the 'helpline'. Unfortunately it was too muchg for them to refund themselves but would have been happy to do so, my track record is fine and we have what they say are extenuating circumstances so have written to and address they gave me and fingers crossed will hopefully get some back.

Revisiting again.

Thank you all for your help. Wrote a letter to the address given to me by the bank and got a reply today saying that as a 'goodwill gesture' (Note not a refund) for the full amount plus £10.
