How much do people on benefits receive?

stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:09

This is a genuine question - if you were in the situation where you don't work and have everything paid for, how much do you have 'cash' each week/month.

There is no polite way of asking that, and I apologise in advance, I don't want to offend anyone.

I'd just like to know after everything is paid for how much do people have to live on?

Thanks in advance.

.

mysterymoniker · 28/01/2009 18:12

it's obviously going to vary wildly depending upon how many children and how old, whether or not any members of the family have a disability, how much if anything has to be contributed to housing costs and stuff like that?

stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:13

I used to work in Social Services and met people who didn't work becuase they had disabled children and lived in council accommodation.

I just wondered how much are you looking at for everything after the bills have been paid?

I don't actually know, are you thinking of going on to benefits?

SparklyGothKat · 28/01/2009 18:14

i am not going to answer this as I have 4 children, 2 on disability allowence so get extra.

mysterymoniker · 28/01/2009 18:15

there is a website that can help you work out your entitlement stickybeaker, entitledto.com

fryalot · 28/01/2009 18:15

dp lost his job in July/August last year and he's been unemployed ever since.

I haven't worked since I had ds.

At the end of each week, we have on paper -£8.00

In actual fact, we just about manage. It works quite well in that we get different benefits on different days, some are paid monthly, some fortnightly and some weekly; some on a Monday, some on a Wednesday and some on a Friday so even if the bank account is completely empty, we generally only have to wait a day or two until there is more in there.

Of course on those days, we eat whatever's in the freezer.

Hope this helps

LadyMuck · 28/01/2009 18:16

"after everything is paid for" - I assume that you mean housing benefit (for those who rent) and council tax benefit?

For a single person over 25 I think the rate is £60.50. For a couple the rate is £94.95 per week. They would get child tax credit and child benefit as normal. If they own their own home then they now get help with the interest on up to a £200,000 loan after 13 weeks. They would have got a £25 cold weather payment as a one-off, but would have to meet all of fuel, utility bills from the above amounts.

Nemoandthefishes · 28/01/2009 18:16

completely depends on individual cicrumstances. Look up benefits on google and work out every possible scenario if you really want to know

FAQtothefuture · 28/01/2009 18:16

depends how many children and a whole load of other factors.

benefits · 28/01/2009 18:17

Well it depends. We receive
ctc of £229.40 per week
carers allowance of £50.55 pw
IS of £236 per fortnight (-at the moment because currently repaying something at £9 a week)
dla - 2 x £339 per 4 weeks
dla 1 x £268 per 4 weeks (+ mobility car)
family allowance £132.80 per 4 weeks
which is £2667.60 total, per 4 weeks

rent and CT paid, etc etc.

I know it sounds an obscene amount, which is why I namechanged . But I'd swop any of you your jobs for this money, if you'd take all our disabilities too.

LadyMuck · 28/01/2009 18:18

There are various disability/carer premiums as well. These make a large difference to the amounts for both income support and tax credits (and there is the non-means-tested DLA as well).

stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:18

Wow - £94.95 per week? That seems like nothing. My reason for asking is long and boring, but those figures are helpful. I really appreciate input.

stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:20

I appreciate that caring for people with disabilities brings big cost implications. Thank-you for namechanging benefits!

FAQtothefuture · 28/01/2009 18:20

fwiw I get

£185 CB every 4 weeks
£487 CTC every 4 weeks
£60.50 (well £49 at the moment as I'm paying back a budgetting loan) every week IS

Don't currently qualify for HB - but will from next week.

So I get £914 every 4 weeks actually into my account. That's for me and 3 children

stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:21

benefits - can I ask if you struggle on this amount or is it OK?

OP posts:
stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:23

FAQ - same question please!

FAQtothefuture · 28/01/2009 18:25

was a huge struggle when I was paying for my housing costs out of it.

Still going to be hard when I move, but not as hard

benefits · 28/01/2009 18:26

we get by. we have a lot of redecorating and replacing costs and stuff and aids to buy and don't want to detail because it would make me identifiable, but there are many things to buy, to mend and appointments to travel to. we are not living the high life on it at all.

there is no pride in it. but no other choice either.

stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:29

Thank-you. I don't want to make out like I'm judging or anything.

As for the aids to buy I know how pricey things related to disabilities can be.

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 28/01/2009 18:32

fwiw, I get a similar amount to benifits, its seems a huge amount, but soon get used up on petrol, travel costs to hospitals etc
