What is tax code BR and how can you change it?

DH changed jobs in August and has tax code BR (emergency tax?). He gave them his p45 when he started, and they said they would sort it but haven't. What can he do? Will we get the extra money back? Thanks.

BR means Basic Rate. It means that all the income will be taxed at 20% without taking his personal allowance into account. The overcharge will be paid back when it's sorted out. Definitely chase his payroll department!

BR code is Basic rate, so it means he gets 20% deducted off everything he earns, he doesn't get a tax free allowance. What code's on the P45? he should have a copy for his records. his new employer should change the code to whatever's on the P45. Have HMRC issued a PAYE notice of coding lately?

If it's not sorted by the end of the tax year HMRC will repay the overpaid tax to you. They should do it automatically once the employer processes the P60s at the end of the year, they need to do this by mid May.

The p45 am sure had a code, it was from jobcentre though (JSA for 2 weeks to activate mortgage insurance) so am unsure if that makes a difference? He's been overpaying by a few hundred a month, I do hope we get it back.

Erm, is that £32,000 +? Or has it gone up now? I am pretty sure he'll come in under £32,000 or a few k over so hopefully we won't get a whopping tax bill!

Payroll didn't sort mine out when I was on BR. They kept saying they would, but never did and in the end they told me to ring the tax office myself which I did. I then got the tax refunded after about 3 months.

Think higher rate is around £39k.

Jura - that's £34.6k + personal allowance though - so for most people it's nearly £40k.
