Depends what measure of inflation you use. And inflation is coming down. Govt uses Consumer Prices Index which came down to 4.1% in Dec.

costs a bomb

llareggub · 07/01/2009 18:44

I'm pretty sure there won't be any more than 2.45%.

Tinker · 07/01/2009 18:44

Doubt you'll get more either tbh.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 07/01/2009 19:01

i think they will match what scotland got which i think was just over 3%

every little helps!

No chance, I'm afraid. We've not had 3% for years.

Our LA, like others, has to make massive cuts to keep council tax under 5%, and pay for single status. A high pay increase will mean far bigger cuts.

HeadFairy · 07/01/2009 19:06

According to my employer it's 1%

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 07/01/2009 19:17

Scotland council staff got 3%

the union is asking for 6%

OP posts:
llareggub · 07/01/2009 19:18

The unions know the real picture. They are only asking for 6& to satisfy their members.

The most we've got since around 2002 is 2.75%.

flowerybeanbag · 07/01/2009 19:19

6% cost of living? Oh for crying out loud.

Tinker · 07/01/2009 19:21

I'm sure the union are well aware that 6% is unlikely. But you don't go in with your final offer do you?

flowerybeanbag · 07/01/2009 19:24

Well no. It's the thought of anyone with any credibility stating that even as a starting position that baffles me.

Sorry I really am going to zip my mouth shut, the 'cost of living' thread title was a bit of a red rag which I should ignore.

llareggub · 07/01/2009 19:30

It is pretty bonkers every year, flowery.

I dread to think how much time and energy is wasted on the negotiations, because we always get somewhere in the region of 2.5-3%. It is known as the annual cost of living award and has been since around 1849 or something.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 07/01/2009 19:54

i only asked the question as i thought 6% was very unrealistic..
