house insurance

Can anyone recommend a good company for house insurance? I thought I had a good deal with Halifax but they have just increased payments enormously this year (for no reason - we haven't had any claims) so want to change company.

prettybird, do you work for these people? If not, maybe you should. At this rate you'll be exceeding your sales target no problem. I did say "a friend" recommended them when they asked how I'd heard of them. Hope MN counts as "a friend" (sad person that I am).

Well, if we all take up their cheaper rate, I guess that may be enough to guarantee LV don't go bust (on the pyramid principle!). More seriously, how can they be so much cheaper than everyone else's policy? I'm getting a little spooked.

PS now I come to think about it, LV did ask rather fewer questions than some of the other companies before giving me the quote (over the 'phone. They are sending full details). eg they didn't ask about security/burglar alarms etc. Maybe it will be in the small print.

It's not that I don't want a good deal, it's just it's such a good deal...!!

natuionwide are worth checking as are AXA direct. Nit sure who we've with now Generally better to have buildings and contents together as if you do have a problem they are less likely to argue over whose responsibility something is. Some will give you a discount for more than one insurance. We've had bad experience with budget car insurance.

thanks, tatt. I'll check those out. I was checking out a few of the other names mentioned on here and have found out that Liverpool Victoria and Frizzell are the SAME company! So that's even more people with LV!

cheap quotes can just mean you fit the type of person they want at the time. But if its very cheap it may change a lot next year.

Prettybird · 30/03/2005 16:05

...no, I don't work for LV but I do work in Sales (in the telecomms industry).

Didn't know Frizzell was the same company.

I think one of the reasons that they are well priced is becasue they are a friendly scoiety so don't have any shoreholders to have to pay out to.

The other, as tatt says, is that you "fit" the profile that they are looking for.

Havign said that, I've now been with them for two years - and they didn't up the premiums siginficantly on renewal. It'll be interesting to see what happens this year though, after us making a claim this year.

i am going to get a quote later when children are in bed and i have time (LV). i had done a google search (best price home insurance etc) a while ago and found a broker site, ie you put in all your info on one page, and it them lists umpteen quotes which hugely varied in price. a lot of them wont accept a high estimated contents figure, so wont quote, but 125k seems very large, you usually only need 35k ish for contents (at the very most). most ins companies will pay your building Society/bank transfer ins penalty as well (£25 ish)if you ask them too.
