Tax credits - 4 years of hell - they have finally agreed they were entirely wrong in WRITING.

To say this is a load off my mind would be the understatement of the century. We have a 2 inch thick file of letters demanding almost £8000 worth of payments - twice the total of what they had ever paid us.

Random, seemingly unconnected amounts, letters with threats of court/sequestering of wages/people coming to the door and leaving notes. 57 letters from them, sometimes 3 a day all with different amounts.

Today, out of the blue a letter saying they had miscalculated and that they were sorry for the inconvenience, that they admit they made a mistake updating their records and that they are randomly giving us £150 which they forgot to pay us in 2003.

We have not claimed working tax credits for 3 years as we are fortunate enough to not be entitled to them so this £150 is a lovely bonus for the past and makes up for the many hours spent writing letters (never phoned them once is my tip and always send recorded delivery )

What a nightmare, glad it's sorted now

That is scandulous. The stress on you all must have been enormous. I had a very small scale problem a couple of years ago when they demanded repayments, despite me keeping them fully informed of my circunmstances. I vowed never to claim again, but DH has left and I am not in a position to turn down help. I am worried about the payments though and will never feel they are totally mine.

Spend the £150 on something nice!

Im so glad you have got this sorted but I must say £150 compenstation payment is laughable considering all the stress involved.

However this is HMRC......
