No advice but much sympathy, I'm in the same boat

Everything was fine til a couple of weeks ago, then my dp was put on shorter hours on half the money and kaboom.. everything goes wrong (

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 08/12/2008 11:01

the prob weve got is that my dp became self employed a year ago and there are alot of monies owing but people arent paying esp this time of the year ie Xmas so weve been relying heavily on our tax credits. i havent even got a penny to buy a xmas tree..

i feel for the people who have lost or losing their jobs around this time of year...

why why why do we live in a crap world and the credit crunch etc not helping

The Mumsnet correct statement is, "I'm fed up of having no money. I only earn £250,000."

Hope things improve for you. And try not to worry about Christmas.

SuperSillyus · 08/12/2008 11:22

At least monies owing will come through eventually and things should improve. There is just so much pressure at christmas. Last year I got the kids loads of toys on ebay and even then they don't play with half of it so this year they are getting small gifts.

Can you decorate a twig and tell everyone it's designer?

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 08/12/2008 12:00

gosh i wish we did earn £250k...

we noticed that they payers dont pay till jan or mostly feb!...

i had enough money to buy a tree and the girls pressies but what didnt help that my sil's got a mobile on our contract and she usually paid the money in before her bill get paid - its under my name and she is blacklisted for 5 yrs cos she got behind on her mortgage) but lately her bill is high and we barely got any money to cover if she doesnt pay it in in time....

she owes bank charge and admin fee

ive told dp's to tell his sis to have her own bank but prob is the contract is in m y name

confiscate the phone until it is paid. Your contract, your phone!

devoutsceptic · 08/12/2008 12:13

I know it's not the main issue but your sis should get her own pay as you go phone - no contract needed. Tell her today you are cancelling the contract (and really do cancel it!) as you need to control every penny going in and out of the account as you are getting charges and it's causing you sleepless nights.
Talk to the bank about temporarily or permanently increasing your overdraft as you have late payments coming it. This will prevent more bank charges which are ruinous.

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 08/12/2008 12:20

im at my max in my overdraft and its not helping using our credit cards too...i hate using them...

my dp and his business partner are giving it till Sept to see if this business is worth carrying on

It does usually take a couple of years to establish when setting up a new business at the best of times.
Hopefully next christmas you will be better off. As long as you can have a nice dinner and have something to give the children, maybe postpone presents to/from your partner this year?

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 08/12/2008 12:51

Biglips Why is your SIL's cold more important than YOUR health. She might feel rotten but if something is important you can function with a cold. I expect though, there is probably more to it than that.

Have you anything to sell? Any brand new clothes that your lo has outgrown before had a chance to wear?

You can earn money by saving money sometimes.

i.e. If you do a supermarke shop once a month for heavy essentials and then top up daily/weekly from the local shops/market. If you can walk you'll only buy what you can manage to put on the buggy and will only be able to plan one or two days ahead, reducing food waste.

Review your service charges.

Get DH to make his lunch for work rather than buy (mine spends around £40 week on lunch

Drive less if you can.

biglips - doesn't your sister have the internet? If so she can pay the money into your bank account online - no excuse.

my biggest money saving tips are:

look on uswitch to check you are with the cheapest energy providers

keep all leftovers for lunch next day/to give dc for their dinner/freeze.

each week look at what you have left before you go shopping again and meal plan. try to make the most of what you have and only buy the extra things you need to make the meals on the plan for the next week.

if you are inclined to buy takeaways when you can't be arsed to cook then cook things in bulk and then put into portions and freeze so you can reheat those instead of buying a takeaway or ready meal.

Eat more meat free meals. We do this to save money and what meat we do buy comes from the market.

Use Lidl/Aldi/Netto for for half price fruit and veg, tinned beans, chickpeas etc, frozen peas, olive oil (we decant it into a spray bottle so you use less), fresh herbs, tuna, tinned tomatoes, noodles, eggs, cheese, milk, plain yogurt, butter, frozen fish, free range chicken, dishwasher powder, washing up liquid, washing powder. Then we go to Asda for unrefined sugar, wholemeal flour, wholemeal pasta, brown rice, salt free pasatta, porridge, shredded wheat, salt and sugar free muesli, bread (you could make your own if you wanted to be really good), spices, bouillon powder and other stuff you can't get in Lidl.

sorry can't help. am skint too. will follow thread and try and post later when i have more time...big hugs x

devoutsceptic · 08/12/2008 15:31

PHone the bank and ask for your overdraft to be increased. It's go to be better than having bank charges. They can only say no at worst.
How much do you owe his sister?

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 09/12/2008 15:37

well weve asked his sis to set up a standing order....dont know why we didnt do that before prob cos of our heads is up our a*s atm.

We shop in Aldi most of the time or mostly Iceland. once in a blue moon ill shop in asda using promotion codes/savings.

i do meal plans all the time... we do eat varied but meat 2-3 times a week. we never have ready made meals - yuck!...4 times a week i make from scratch. we buy takeaways about 1-2 times a month.

yes my dp buys his foods at dinner....he used to come home for dinner but not for a ong time and its hard when you got a vanload of work mates that getting takeaways.

no new clothes as havent bought any as only big size clothes which im still wearing them atm.

the problem is we had to give his sister some money back that we owed to her for her hols but we didnt really have it but dp said "we cant say no!" but atm we have said to her "before you ask for anymore money back, weve got no money now but as soon we have more money we will pay it back" (think we owe £2500).

so i am being sensible with the money but dp's not earning enough for himself, and weve got no money for dp's to sell himself...we just need one big contract and start building the money.
