does duty affect customs?

You know how the duty has just gone up, is that just on alcohol?

I ordered something from Play.com on 22nd and it's arrived today with a £13 customs charge - however it's been took back because I wasn't in.

I've never had to pay customs on a play.com item before, just wondered if this was anything to do with the recent changes.

Though I am only guessing it's from Play.com! LOL will find out tomorrow when I go to post office.

The duty on alcohol is an excise duty, which is charged (by volume) on liquids. Import duty is determined by Customs, and the rate charged would depend on: 1. What the goods are, and 2. Which country they were shipped from.

If your stuff was sent from a non-EU country then unfortunately it's liable for duty and VAT.

It comes from Jersey as far as I am aware.

Thanks for your reply
