I am asking this question on behalf of my brother and sil as they don't have the internet.

They would like to know if they would qualify for child tax credit with a joint annual income of £24.000. They have one child under the age of one. I dont think they can get wtc because of their income. Am I telling them the right thing?

Thanks.

go to entitledto.com and you can find out all potential benefits dependant on exact circumstance

They might get some WTC the childcare element.

BONKERZ · 21/11/2008 19:48

they would get child tax credit but not working tax credit....put their details in entitledto.com

Dragonfly74 · 21/11/2008 19:49

Ok i'll do that thanks. x

There's a calculator here - try putting their details through, then call the helpline and they'll give you a more accurate eligibilty calculation.

Dragonfly74 · 22/11/2008 14:19

After taking a look at the tax credits calculator last night my sil has called the tax credits helpline, Neither myself or my sil can believe what they have told her, They said with a joint income of £24.000 they will qualify for £141 a week. I've told her if its right then great but I wouldn't spend it all yet because i've heard people say in the past that mistakes have been made and they've had to pay it back. Does this seem right to you?? I know what me and dh get and we have 2 dc's and its nowhere near this amount. And this is not the amount that the tax credits calculator gave either.

Have they actually made a claim yet? Because the helpline will give you an estimate but until you complete the claim form you don't know the exact amount.

It does seem high.

They will get more since their dc is under one, but it still seems high.

LIZS · 22/11/2008 14:31

Do they have childcare costs ?

Dragonfly74 · 22/11/2008 14:33

Hi LIZS
No they don't have child care costs.

Thats about our total income and we get £210 a month for three!

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 22/11/2008 22:03

Doesn't sound massively wrong to me. They will have back dated it for 3 months so that will increase teh amount of payments a bit. And they get a baby allowance for 1 under 1.

BONKERZ · 23/11/2008 17:11

we have income of 24,750 and get £71 a week with 2 children BUT with a child under one you get more ALTHOUGH we get a little more cos DS gets DLA. Sounds way too much, may be that per month?????

laidbackinengland · 23/11/2008 17:15

Remember it's based on last years income . Maybe it was calculated based on a period when their income was lower ?

triplets · 24/11/2008 08:58

Bonkerz.your income is about the same as ours, so we get £220 a month for 3 kids, which is £55 a week approx, how on earth do they work it out? May I ask if the DLA is counted as income? We have just been awarded Attendance Allowance as my husband has cancer. Are you entitled to more child credit then if you receive either of those?

BONKERZ · 24/11/2008 09:03

DS gets DLA as he has ASD, i get carers. The DLa is not ocunted as income BUT the carers allowance is counted as income (£2607 per year)

triplets · 25/11/2008 08:48

Is it worth me asking then if you are entitled to more if we get AA? My husband has cancer, treatable but not curable.

littleboyblue · 25/11/2008 08:51

My dp is the sole earner and is on about £23,000. We get £40.90 per month in CTC. That's for one child....

Dragonfly74 · 25/11/2008 11:17

Thanks for the replies everyone. Does it seem to anyone else that the tax credits system is full of inconsistencies?

I've been speaking to people in RL about what me and dh get and people in exactly the same circumstances are getting either more or less than us, It feel sometimes like someone has just picked a number off the top of their head.... Dh is the sole earner at the minute because we have a 2.9yr old and a dd under one he earns around £15.000 and we get £83 per week in CTC.

But on that salary he should be getting working tax credit too, which is normally paid with your wages.

There is a set formula for working out tax credits and it does sound like the helpline have given your SIL the wrong information.

snigger · 25/11/2008 15:28

Tax credits haven't been paid with wages for quite some time now - it's bank, post office account, or giro.
