Does this sound right to you? Written off dishwasher

My dishwasher has been written off, and the insurance are sending me a voucher for a new one. Anyway had a call today from the engineer who fitted a new pump yesterday, and he wants to come and take the pump off He said its because he hasn't been paid for it, and he has to send it back to get a refund as now the dishwasher has been written off he won't get paid!!?? I was so taken back I agreed, but that is my property so should I allow him?

no, I wouldn't let him.

it isn't anything to do with him. he fitted it and he needs to take the issue of payment up with whoever ought to be paying him

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 19:39

I get the feeling he won't send it back, and will reuse it as its brand new

Who would be supposed to be paying him? Your insurers? In which case they should be letting you know you should give it back if that's the case, which sounds unlikely.

thisisyesterday · 20/11/2008 19:43

well exactly.
in fact, I would call the people who sent the engineer out and tell them what he has asked you.
see what they say

I am going to phone the insurance company tomorrow, I won't be able to give it away without a pump. I want my pump!!!

yes do. or just don't answer the door. or, better still, answer it and tell him you've spoken to the insurers and they've told you not to give it to him lol

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 19:49

but he might be scary!! [whim]

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 19:55

I ahve his phone number so am going to phone the insurance tomorrow then phone him, I think he is pulling a fast one.

he said he would phone before he comes tomorrow. I might get my dad round, he is better at arguing with people.

I agree it sounds as though he's pulling a fast one. If your dad's about and happy to come round and you would otherwise not feel right about it, that sounds like a good plan as well.

The dishwasher will belong to the insurance company now (if you have your vouchers) and I'm guessing they're likely to scrap it, so it does seem reasonable for the plumber to recover a brand-new part, if only on the grounds of wastefulness. How come the insurance company started repairs and then wrote it off? (Sorry if there are other threads I haven't read!)

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 20:02

they replaced the pump tuesday (not yesterday sorry) but its needs some other parts, the electrics have gone on it now. The insurance company said that because its taken so long to get parts and because it needs more done to it, they have written it off.

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 20:04

its taken about 4 weeks to get the pump, it needs a new electric panel, and a new arm

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 20/11/2008 20:06

they mayt not scrap it. it may go somewhere to be reconditioned and sold on.

and regardless of that, if the plumber wants the bit back he needs to talk to the insurance company, not SGK.

what if the insurers pick it up and think that SHE has taken the part? how would she prove otherwise? (this is unlikely I am sure, but still)

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 20:07

Actually I haven't had my voucher yet, so will tell him to wait till I have that before he can have anything, its still mine techically

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 20:08

should have told him I had taken it to the tip this morning lol

Well, if the insurance company authorised the pump repair (albeit 4 weeks ago) they'll have to pay the chappie who installed it, so that's probably a bit of a red herring.

Can't help thinking that although he may be on a bit of a scam, he's also being practical entrepreneurial environmentally friendly.

SparklyGothKat · 21/11/2008 11:06

haha!! Spoke to the insurance compancy and he isn't allowed to touch it!! They said that the reason he hasn't been paid yet is because he hasn't sent in the work sheet. So was pulling a fast one!!

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 21/11/2008 20:11

ha! did he come round? or did you go out/

SparklyGothKat · 21/11/2008 20:25

I phoned him after I spoke to the insurance compancy and told him that the insurance compancy said he wasn't allowed to take any thing off the machine, he tried to tell me that they had told him to take the parts before he would get paid, told him to phone the insurance compancy and speak to them about it, but I would not be allowing anything to be removed.
