Confused about my energy bill

Have gas and electric through same supplier. Pay by direct debit. Received the bill this morning and we are in credit with our payments (only by 15 pound but still at least not behind). They say that they need to increase the direct debit by 50 pound per month to cover our usage

because prices have gone up and they estimating what you will use for the next year. You can say no though.

It went up by 40 pound per month last time (3 months ago), this I could understand because we were quite a bit behind and I know prices were increasing then. But in 3 months we have caught up and gone into credit even though I have had the heating and tumble drier on lots in past 3 months compared to the 3 months before that when I didn?t have them on hardly at all.

Because you are likely to use more for the next 3m - in their eyes cos it is winter.

If it is not an extortionate amount I would just pay it - the last thing you want is to be hit by a stinker of a bill in a few months. Instead you will get a nice rebate.

I know I will use a lot in the next few months but I thought they calculate by estimating the whole year usage and giving a monthly amount that will even out???

I will definitely pay increase though as like you say it is better to end up in credit than have to face a bill at the end for being behind.
