benefits but also running a business of ebay?

i know of a family where the dh works a minimum wage job and the dw sells stuff on ebay (mostly packs of laces)

They have 5 children - 4 of which are at home. They claim child benefit for this kids which i know they are entitled to but they claim tax credits housing benefits etc by saying the only income they have is the money the dh earns

wwyd - would you turn a blind eye or report them.

they are always complaining when some one gets something new or a holiday or something but they've always got money for new top of the range mobile phones, the kids always have branded clothes etc etc

"they are always complaining when some one gets something new or a holiday or something but they've always got money for new top of the range mobile phones, the kids always have branded clothes etc etc"

Let me get this sraight.

She sells packs of laces on Ebay which quite frankly is never going to earn her mega-bucks and you want to shop her?

To sell something like that she'd have to be fairly desperate for money IMO.

mommy6 · 25/10/2008 20:39

If its only afew pounds i would leave it.
If they were earning say 50-100 each and every week,i would want to report them.

Get a life.

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 25/10/2008 20:42

how do you know that these 'top of the range phones, branded clothing' are not from EBAY ????

seriously, this is not running a business, this is making extra cash to survive.

leave it!

FAQ · 25/10/2008 20:43

tbh even if they were claiming IS - she'd have to be earning more than £20 a week from it before she'd even have to declare it.....

Damn actually you'd better report me......I'm doing a mass clear out and selling lots of stuff on ebay and at carboots (mind you I doubt it works out anywhere close to £20 a week I've got so far lol)

JODIEhadababy · 25/10/2008 20:44

This has got me worried now (I'm being serious) I'm on Maternity leave (Self Employed, so on Mat Allowance) and I'm in the process of selling aload of stuff on e-bay, should I not be????

blushingm · 25/10/2008 20:46

she actually boast to making about £200 per week - does that make a difference

FAQ if you are selling all new stuff and making a profit then that's diffferent from just having a cleaar out

and i was asking for advice not to be insulted

OP posts:
FAQ · 25/10/2008 20:48

£200 a week from selling laces????

FAQ · 25/10/2008 20:49

ermm well quite a lot of stuff is new (never been used) and I'm making a profit....(would be no point if I wasnt making anything from it )

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 25/10/2008 20:51

blushingM.......I would leave it.

she is not working, and you can never prove anything anyway.

in todays climate, anyone will be trying to make extra cash, and I cannot say I blame them.

expatinscotland · 25/10/2008 20:52

if she's running a business, even on Ebay, sooner or later HMRC is going to know about it.

i think she's pulling your leg about earning £200/week selling laces.

if he's on min wage, even if she is earning £200, guess what?

they'd still qualify for tax credits and housing benefit.

leave it.

blushingm · 25/10/2008 20:53

it's not just laces she sells and i know the phones don't come from ebay as he always talks about getting discount at car phone waarehouse.

i know of someone who was on incaapacity benefit and had to repay all of it for aabout 3 years as the benefit people said that she had an incpme

OP posts:
FAQ · 25/10/2008 20:53

presuming you're talking about shoe laces?? Average price (of those that sell - lots that don't by the looks of things) is £3 - so she must be selling at least 70 odd sets of laces a week.......well actually more than that as she'll have the costs of getting her stock, and ebay fees to pay......

blushingm · 25/10/2008 20:54

i know they could still get tax credits- me and dh both work and claaim the tax credits

OP posts:
blushingm · 25/10/2008 20:55

fine i'll leave it

OP posts:
FAQ · 25/10/2008 20:55

and as expat says even with the £200 they would still qualify for housing benefit..

expatinscotland · 25/10/2008 20:56

it doesn't matter what she sells!

even if she's making £200/week and he's working min wage for 35 hours/week they are STILL eligible for tax credits AND, depending on how many kids and the rents, housing benefit as well, especially with that many kids at home.

give it a rest and leave it.

TotalChaos · 25/10/2008 20:58

I'ld mind my own business.

JODIEhadababy · 25/10/2008 21:08

I'd keep out too, if she is doing something wrong and loses/has to pay back any benefits, then what would happen to all the kids?

As for the £200, she's probably just trying to 'keep up with the jonesy's' and not earning that much at all.

I do understand though about getting annoyed about 'moaning' about not affording a holiday when her children are dressed in 'branded' clothes, but take it all wth a pinch of salt, if she's a SAHM with 6 (or was it 5) kids, she's probably desperate for some adult convo (I know I am witha toddler and a baby! )
