Child benefit. Anyone in the know?

ok. Now i know alot of you will think this is unbelievable but i have just realised that i havnt claimed child benefit for my second child!
my dd was born in april 05 and have claimed for her since a few weeks. However they sent the wrong amount a few times and had a few problems etc. Got it sorted. It is all paid into my bank account and i dont really touch it. it is our savings for holiday spending money and christmas etc. I do not use this bank account for anything else and dont even have a pin for it as go and withdraw in the bank.

i remember filling out the forms for my ds when he was born oct 07, however when he was 10 days old he was readmitted to hospital and spent a week in there, and im pretty sure i didnt actually get round to doing it. By the time we got him settled it was xmas etc and then i havnt really checked what was being paid in.

from taking the money out over the last month or so for various reasons, holiday birthday etc i realised i get paid about £18 a week. Which i think is just for my dd.

i am due again in just over 4 weeks and dont know what to do. We looked at moving at the start of the year and all the paperwork was packed away when we went on the market and was put in a friends garage. However we since stayed ( due to unexpected pg) and he kindly kept the stuff to let us keep the room. I have no idea who to speak to, what i would need to find etc.

Would i be better to sort it out before dc 3, or just apply for both after.

Im not trying to chase up the payment for the year as it is completely my fault, however i dont want to not claim for him for the next 15 years or so.

any advice please. Got to go out for a bit, will be back later. x

maybe you could go to the citizen's advice bureau? they may be bit more user friendly than jobcentre!!

amyjo, you can apply for it online. they will backpay you, but only for 3 months.

MrsMatryoshka · 22/10/2008 09:38

Just ring them they are usually nice and explain what happened they will probably ask for his birth certificate and may backdate up to 10 weeks (which I think is the max they are allowed to) .
£18 is what my sister gets for just one child so you are not claiming for him.

LIZS · 22/10/2008 09:39

You can only get it backdated by 3 months. Ring your local tax office and ask as they can check via your NI number.

omeNofthefleshes · 22/10/2008 09:44

£18 is just for one child the think it is around £12 for each subsequent one.

mumoverseas · 22/10/2008 09:52

The current rate for first child is £18.80 per week (from April 2008) and for each subsequent child it is £12.55 per week.
You need to apply for your second child asap and unfortunatley I think you will find you will only get it updated for 3 months. You should also be entitled to the child trust fund £250 so make sure you enquire about that too.
