"So for a home with average usage, Click Energy 5 gas prices have risen on average by 42% and electricity on average by 21%."

42%!?!?!?! They are already taking £69 a month from me for gas, which leaves us with sod all for I dunno, food etc!

I don't get the whole turning the heating on atm tbh. It was 23 degrees here at the weekend and I still have my bedroom window open atm.

Dp wanted to turn the heating on this morning until I pointed out he was wandering around in just pants .

We have card meters for both and spend around £70 for both a month, although it will go up a lot when the heating is needed. I boggle at the amounts on this thread (and others) I think I would go into a coma if I had to pay £200+ just for gas .

AbstractMouse · 15/10/2008 01:45

Storage heaters are v shite itbird, my Mum had these for years, it was roasting until around mid afternoon and then they gave up the ghost. We shivered through evenings, especially as a very drafty house with no double glazing.

Better than no CH though (remembers ice on the inside of windows and getting dressed in bed lol).

misi · 15/10/2008 02:05

apparently today in the gas trading markets, the traders were giving gas to suppliers for free to get rid of it as the price has tumbled recently and stocks have reached near capacity!! as the price of gas is linked to oil and oil is down 42% or so it should mean that prices will come down, don't hold your breath too much but bills are not expected to be as high as thought for this winter they say.

one word for these people though....

I have to admit (and I know they don't always make the most financial sense) I love our pre-pay gas and electric meters!

I have never had one before but when we bought our new house they were already in there, we were going to go onto D/D for fuel straight away but used the meters for a while and OMG it's great lol

I love not dreading the quartarly bill coming in or worrying that the direct debit isn't enough to cover it and we'll be landed with a huge bill

Plus we've juat switched to a company that charges the same rate per unit as if you were paying by D/D so it isn't costing us anymore but I feel much more in control

'I don't get the whole turning the heating on atm tbh. It was 23 degrees here at the weekend and I still have my bedroom window open atm.'

You'd get it if you lived in Scotland. I don't think we ever saw 23 degrees at all but for a week or so in summer and a week in Spring.

bozza · 15/10/2008 09:50

I agree with abstractmouse. We actually had our heating on a couple of weeks ago when it turned cold. But it has been so mild for the last 10 days or so I have turned the thermostat right down to 8 degrees so that it will not come on. The DC have swapped to long pjs and DH and I have got thicker duvet out but other than that we really haven't needed it.

bozza · 15/10/2008 09:51

expat we are in Yorkshire and honestly Sunday was the warmest day for weeks and weeks.

expatinscotland · 15/10/2008 09:55

Well, it missed Scotland entirely. Even teh ILs in Edinburgh remarked that it was not especially warm at the weekend.

We have had ground frost here plenty of times already.

I always laugh when I read these scathing articles in publications, scolding people for running round in tshirts and barefeet in summer and immediately stop reading them, because they're always written by someone who's living in England, usually southern England, hundreds of miles from here.

expatinscotland · 15/10/2008 09:56

sorry, meant, in winter.

popsycal · 15/10/2008 10:03

edf energy is what i am looking into as eon has whopped ours up too

popsycal · 15/10/2008 10:04

we pay 66 a month for both atm so goodness knows what i twuill be

whispywhisp · 15/10/2008 10:06

expat...hate to disagree with the reports that you've read/heard but the South of England isn't exactly the warmest place to be either. In fact it has been very cold here for the last few weeks. Whilst I know we don't get the harsh Winters you get up there I've been on holiday to Scotland many times - Spring, Summer and Autumn and the weather has been glorious.

ShowOfHands · 15/10/2008 10:10

Thermals

Lentils

Becoming practically vegetarian

Porridge

Whole family sleeping in one bed

Not using car at all

Collecting fallen logs in local woods to use for firewood

Layers and layers of clothes

Brisk walking to keep warm

A stiff upper lip and jolly smile

expatinscotland · 15/10/2008 10:12

Oh, it's glorious, just not very warm, whispy, not up here. We are in the Western Highlands, but not nearly as far north as some MNers.

FWIW, this year has been very wet all over the country, sadly, for the second year running.

whispywhisp · 15/10/2008 10:12

Showofhands...that's a good list!

expatinscotland · 15/10/2008 10:13

you forgot whisky, Show .

whispywhisp · 15/10/2008 10:13

expat...I just didn't want you to think the South was always warm and sunny...cos it aint I can assure you!

expatinscotland · 15/10/2008 10:18

i've been to the south many times enough to know, whisp.

oh, SOH, fleece throws on offer in Tesco £3/eah!

whispywhisp · 15/10/2008 10:26

expat - good!

Flamesparrow · 15/10/2008 10:36

Oh fleece throws. Good thought expat. We have one on our sofa for chilly evenings but a few extra are a good idea.

I want to move to Scotland. It's our five year plan. Spent some of our honeymoon in the Higlands. It was gloriously sunny I have to say. We went skinny dipping in the North sea. Except you don't want to know that do you?

bozza · 15/10/2008 11:02

Expat I do realise that is a bit warmer here. And also I do think we were in the luckiest part of the country weatherwise for the last week or so and it is starting to cool down again. But really I would say that this last Sunday was one of the top 10 days weatherwise this year here. Obviously not saying much and of course it is getting colder at night than in, say, July.

I'm at work now though and would have far fewer quibbles about putting on the heater next to my desk other than I would get too hot....

hannahsaunt · 15/10/2008 11:05

John Lewis have a selection of fleece and other fabric undersheets which I'm planning on investing in.

We've been religious about gas and electric use over the last year and despite being in credit with Scottish Hydro for both, they've have said that they still need to increase our monthly dds because the prices have gone up above and beyond what we were already overpaying. Aaarrgh.

Our heating is on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening to take the chill off our cold granite house. Hopefully having our basement converted into living accommodation will mean much more insulation - no draughts coming in from below.

furrycat · 15/10/2008 11:17

Has anyone found that a new boiler has brought their heating down drastically? I still can't work out if it's worth forking out to replace ur 10 year old G rated one or two hang on for a bitlonger
