Bank being stroppy about closing an account

dh and I opened a joint account a few months ago and now want to close it. It seemed like a good idea at the time as we were having a financial crisis BUT things are better now and tbh we can't really be bothered changing all our direct debits etc, so we want to keep our own individual accounts as they are. The thing is, because we've never used the account I can't find the account card they sent me (dh has his) or the cheque books they say they sent . Spoke to a bank teller who said they can't close the account without getting the card and the cheque books back. Could they charge us for not handing them back? and how much is this likely to be? We are good customers of the bank with our mortgage there and both our current accounts. Feel like switching all these elsewhere if they continue giving us a hard time about this! We can't just leave the account open with no money in it, as they take money out of it every month for benefits such as insurance etc. Any bank people with some advice would be much appreciated? I can't face going in to the bank again without some ammunition iykwim!

could you ask for a replacement card saying you have lost yours, then when it arrives, close account sending that one back. Same with cheque books. You'd have to wait a few weeks though.

Oh thanks I never thought of that!? I could do that, as they are taking 3 more months payments from the account regardless of when we close it apparently , so keeping it open a bit longer wouldn't make much difference...

wy would they want everything back? it's not like they can use them again is it?

I know!? That's why I think they're just being stroppy, and feel like switching all our finances to another bank!
