Absolutely no credit /buy now pay later/catalogues-if i cant afford it now i go without.

Write down everything you spend for a month and REALLy scrutinize it - 4 bottles of wine a week =1 thousand pounds a year at least !

Dont try and keep up with Jones-be proud of what you DO have a enjoy actually owning it x

ask yourself if you need if need it or just want it before you buy.
meal plan and use left overs up
save something each week/month after you have paid bills but before you buy anything else

  1. internet shopping - you stick to budget and don't get tempted to impulse buy.
  2. MENU PLAN 3)try ebay for stuff that you need, very often people are selling off brand new items that they have git as unwanted pressies - you can really pick up some bargains.
gem1981 · 29/09/2008 15:41

got not git

Kelix · 29/09/2008 15:42

dont go on ebay!
keep track of what you spend & on what
except that your child(ren) dont need so many toys for christmas

these are mine but I cannot stick to them

BlingLovin · 29/09/2008 15:42

Use cash instead of credit/debit cards. You notice it more AND you know exactly how much you're spending.

Kelix · 29/09/2008 15:43

menu plan is a great one

HeadFairy · 29/09/2008 15:43

don't buy bottled water, use tap

Don't buy expensive coffees/teas etc when out and about(unless gasping) get thermal mug and take your own with you.

Read magazines and newspapers online

Have a sweep set up on your bank account (only if it is free) it sweeps any left over money in your bank account into a savings account at the end of the month. It is surprising how the odd £10 here and there adds up at the end of 12 months.

Supermarket shop with cash, do your list online so you know how much it will cost and then go to the supermarket and buy exactly what is on the list with the cash in your hand. Makes you stick to the list.

Library's for books instead of amazon or book shop

  1. Don't drive over 55/60mph. Feel like an old lady but fuel consumption is dramatically reduced. Kinda stress busting too.

  2. Don't buy any branded goods in the supermarket - always get supermarket own brand.

  3. For everything you buy see if there's a second hand one available. I never thought I'd buy other people's jeans - but here I am, and DD too (at 8mo old she obviously doesn't give a damn though!)

racingsnake · 04/10/2008 22:08
  1. Shop at Lidl.

  2. Take snack out with you and eat in the park to avoid expensive coffe and teacake after shopping. Healthier too; DD gets to run about in the fresh air

  3. /join the library and stop buying books. (Take them back in time though)

PestoMonster · 04/10/2008 22:14

If you're out and about,

  1. Take a flask with tea/coffee etc

  2. Don't buy lollies or icecreams, make the dcs wait till you get home and give them some you've bought from Lidl or Asda at a fraction of the price

3)Buy basics in bulk at a good cash & carry like Costco
