CHEAPEST CAR INSURANCE?

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 05/09/2008 22:00

has anyone just renewed a policy lately or found a fantastically cheap quote?

i have two policies to renew, and tried a few quotes online but they take ageeeeeees to do. So has any companies they feel will be cheap to quote - with esure and lloyds at mo. The quotes i've done are not much different. I can go through a site that offers cashback though. tesco more expensive, as I thought.

Some places are very cheap for certain types of driver. Others for other type of driver. There is no "this is hte cheapest insurer".

for e.g. one company can be cheap for young drivers; anotehr for older drivers; another for prestige cars etc.

How old are you and what type of car do you drive. I am on "Which" now and can tell you who they recommend.

Lilyloo · 05/09/2008 22:09

Also if you go to cancel with your current insurer they usually come up with 'new' deal to stop you!

Ok here are the Which best buys...but they are not driven by price when I read it again, although they do say teh cheaper polices are first on the list.

Medium sized car they recommend the following
Swiftcover; Postoffice & Budget for online quotes
large car (thinking of the Passat maybe?)
Swiftcover, post office & Admiral

If you are in a higher risk area
Admiral, elephant & swiftcover for a higher risk area.

HTH and gives you somewhere to look.

The other thing you can do is look at a comparison site like money supermarket and see what comes out cheapest and maybe look at they cheapest direct to see if moneysupermarket are adding a slice.

The other thing to think about is someone who will llow you a discount with a second policy instead of going with 2 insurers. My Tesco policy (which I did find cheap BTW) will do this - unfortuantely DP has specialist insurance.

Sorry

If you are in a higher risk area
Admiral, elephant & swiftcover for the large car

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 05/09/2008 22:41

thank you, thats really kind. It will be a low risk area. I used to be with Tesco, and they were cheap, but the premiums jumped up for both cars about 3 years ago. Greasy palm are going a cashback if you click through them...

Cheapest I could get recently was with Admiral (also in low risk area). Managed to haggle on the phone and get the price down further too.

eleanorsmum · 06/09/2008 21:19

do NOT use swiftcover. Had very bad experience during which they lost my claim twice, wrote my car off and claimed they'd already paid me! I ended up losing my no cliams even though protected due to their stupidity!

can recommend direct line, tesco and motorminder (childminder)

Eddas · 06/09/2008 21:19

have you tried looking on moneysupermarket.com? I find them very helpful for comparing everything!

notcitrus · 07/09/2008 14:58

I saved £350 with moneysupermarket.com last month - was with Elephant, they quoted Admiral as cheapest, but I phoned Elephant and they agreed to match the quote. Also with moneysupermarket you can click through to the individual insurers and check info and try tweaking things like level of excess.

Worth checking that all your details are correct and up to date - for example they weren't aware MrNC was married, points on his licence had expired, they don't seem to automatically add a year since your last claim unless you point it out, and try to describe your jobs in the best possible terms - eg software engineers are much lower risk apparently than computer programmers, because any teenager can call themselves a programmer...

Confused.com and gocompare.com just crashed when I tried them.

what about admiral multicar? We pay £500 combined for an audi a2 and a golf gti

Majeika · 07/09/2008 16:54

I just got the cheapest quote with Tesco and £40 cashback!
