What proportion of your family income goes on mortgage/rent and childcare each month?

Am not interested in any figures, just a percentage.

When we move back to the UK we're looking at spending about half our monthly income on these 2 outgoings, and I'm wondering if it's too much. We haven't agreed on a particular house yet to rent so now is the time to reduce our budget if I should!

Just over a quarter (but I'm not earning at the moment and DD still goes to nursery).
It will be less than a quarter when I start work in Autumn

hughjarssss · 30/07/2008 19:15

Not sure of the actual percentage but it feels like 98%

I do that if I could only spend half our family income on childcare and a mortgage I would dance naked in the street.

hughjarssss · 30/07/2008 19:16

I do know

Celery · 30/07/2008 19:19

Somewhere between a third and a half.

FAQ · 30/07/2008 19:20

no childcare costs - but 50% goes on my rent (would be slightly more but I'm getting an excellent deal where I am)

paolosgirl · 30/07/2008 19:21

About half. Then we've got petrol, 2 car loans, credit cards, utilities, council tax, food, clothes, after school activities, general costs associated with 3 kids etc etc etc etc ad infinitum

We are skint.

twinsetandpearls · 30/07/2008 19:22

Just under 20% on mortgage, this includes payment protector and house insurance.

Childcare, before and after school is 3 %.

MegBusset · 30/07/2008 19:23

No childcare costs, but mortgage is about 1/3.

reethi96 · 30/07/2008 19:29

About 55% on mortgage. No childcare costs.

Eve34 · 30/07/2008 19:34

33% on mortgage. doesn't sound to bad does it, but feels like it is killing us.

about 55%, am single parent, every penny i earn pays my mortgage. The rest i live off is child maintenance and tax credits.

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 30/07/2008 19:38

45%. No childcare (we have a single income as DP is a SAHD).

Surely actual figures are important, given that if you earn £50k a year then you've still got £25k to play with after the mortgage is paid, but if you earn £15k a year then the remaining £7500 isn't going to go very far at all?

We're penniless at the moment. Dreading the energy price increases. Might have to curb my MN usage

TigerFeet · 30/07/2008 19:41

ermmm...

counts fingers

about 40%

I am shocked actually. I thought it was a lot more than that.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/07/2008 19:43

About a third on mortgage. None of childcare. Am SAHM ATM. When I go back to work after the hols, mortgage will be about 25%, childcare about 10%.

lou031205 · 30/07/2008 19:50

About 40% - no childcare.

catweazle · 30/07/2008 19:54

29% on mortgage (including endowment and income protection) and another 19% on chilcare

brimfull · 30/07/2008 19:58

mortgage about 30%,no child care

ScummyMummy · 30/07/2008 19:59

about 45% on mortgage.
until recently about 6% on afterschool club but now we're doing flexible working instead.

kaz33 · 30/07/2008 20:06

33% and about 10% on debt repayment

NorkyButNice · 30/07/2008 20:12

Thanks everyone - it sounds like 50% is above average.

I know that the figures do make a difference but I wasn't about to ask what everyone's income is (a bit brazen even for me!).

My only concern is what happens if one of us loses our job - obviously DS would leave nursery but it'd still be a large proportion of our income going on rent.

25% on mortgage and 0% on childcare (school/family)

MrsTittleMouse · 30/07/2008 21:47

40% on rent (of take-home, not gross pay). 0% on childcare (but of course I don't bring in any money as a SAHM).
Our next biggest expense is council tax which is 7% of take home (while we're talking budgeting).

ChasingSquirrels · 30/07/2008 21:47

0% on housing and about 7% on childcare (my mum), though ex pays the cm on the day that he drops the children there.

GrinningGorilla · 30/07/2008 21:49

mortgage about 15% childcare 0%.
