Can any one help ?
A friend has just found out that her exP has a really high profile solicitor working for him - she needs to find someone that she feels confidence in.

Your friend should get herself onto the local authority's housing list straight away. She will be high priority as she has a child. Local authorities also do a rent/deposit bond scheme, whereby they effectively guarantee the deposit to the landlord if the tenant does not have the funds to provide the deposit themselves.

So if she can't get a local authority property fairly quickly, she may be able to sort out a private rent, with the deposit bond scheme providing the deposit.

Is she on benefits or does she have some other form of income?

Hi Freckle, no she's not on benefits. She's hoping to pick up some work in the next week or so. She's really against going on benefits etc as she was brought up in a single parent/on benefit family and I think it's got all sorts of connotations in her mind.

I was the same, swore I would never go on to benefits as I didn't want to become the steretype single mother on benefits but sometimes they are there just as a stop gap until you get back on your feet. If she can get work that pays enough to keep her afloat and tax credits can help make childcare affordable if she needs it.

If she goes on a housing list it will look as is she is trying to get a permanent home for herself. Although of course that depends on waiting lists I was quoted ten years for a council house and two years at least for housing association. There was also a waiting list of twleve months to get on the rent bond scheme. I gave up in the end and just got a private rental while I saved to buy.

That's just about how she feels Nikkim, she knows the waiting list situation re housing too. She's got the use of a friends flat for now and is hoping to make the deposit for a place of her own as soon as poss. She's very lucky to have lots of very supportive friends, not to mention ones with 'spare' flats
