do you get more points as time goes on? otherwise how does anyone move up the list?

also for what sort of things do you get medical points for? we have been allocated 0 medical points even though my step-dad (who is moving in with us) is diabetic, has arthritus (sp??), angina and has had 3 heart attacks.

yes you getr more points as the time goes my council use the points system still you wikll get more points for sd's illnesses only if where you are living is making them worse! i.e. bathroom upstairs and he struggles to get to it

In my area the time spent on the list doesn't come into account - when available accommodation comes up then it is offered to the person whose needs are greatest regardless of time on list. There are about 9,000 on the list and 1,200 lets per year.

nappyaddict · 27/06/2008 09:23

micci - what time period is it before you get more points and do they normally send you a letter to let you know?

ladymuck - that doesn't sound like a good system - if you haven't got really high needs surely you never get to the top of the list?

Look at it the other way - the person with the highest needs does get their needs met first.

Would you really think it was fair if some 2,000 people with far less need than you got rehoused first simply because they had been waiting longer?

Agree with micci though, in terms of health etc you really need to show that current accom is unsuitable. However whilst giving you extra points that also restricts your options.

Likewise the fact that your stepfather is with you also reduces options as you willbe looking for a larger house. Eg in my area if you are in the Urgent band for rehousing then the wait for a 4 bed is about 3 year. If you are in the high need band then the wait is over 5 years.

nappyaddict · 27/06/2008 10:06

We are only looking for a 2 bed. Actually I do think it is fair if you've been waiting ages. Those with really high need get loads of points straight away - say 150 points - so get a house sooner. i at the moment have 77 points. in god knows how long i might have 150 points too. i would put them slightly above me in need but not massively as i may have been waiting years. i do think you should get points for time. if not people like me who do need somewhere to live would never get anywhere cos we would never be anywhere near the top of the list to get one.

nappyaddict my council still use the point system.Points are added each year you are on the list, but not many.I think its only about 5.
I know what you mean about how long you have been on the list.I have been waiting 3 years and have 98 points.A house came up not long ago and went to someone who had only been on the list since jan this year.
Medical points are hard to get. They have to be for something that would affect where you need to live. i.e.if you are a wheelchair user you would need something without steps.
You say you are only looking for a 2 bed.Would that be big enough? If your step-dad is moving in with you, will you not need 3 bedrooms. The council will not move you some where, where you will be over crowded.

nappyaddict · 27/06/2008 18:07

they told me that is all they will give me cos ds is still old enough to go in my room. that's odd that it's only 5. on the letter they sent me 52 of my points were in a category called time something or other.

We have a points/bidding system and we get points per year you've been on the waiting list (so our points are made up of a mix of overcrowding/waiting for ever 'cos there's no housing points )

nappyaddict · 27/06/2008 18:28

do you get many points per year serenity?

52 seems a lot for time related points.

TBH I have no idea - I have asked for a proper breakdown of my points, but it hasn't appeared, and I've asked a few times how many points you get per year but can't get a straight answer (last answer was 'um, I'm not sure, I think it changes, it might be 5' ) I have to admit I'm currently in a lull with chasing our council - last time I tried to sort things out or get straight answers I got so pissed off and stressed that my GP diagnosed me with depression. I find burying my head in the sand better for my mental health, lol

Hope you have better luck than us!
