Council Tax Bailiff charges question

Have name changed so RL people who know me and my friend can't find this...

I have a friend down south who has had bailiffs calling for council tax. She fucked up, but got the money together. Paid off 1000 of the debt, but then wanted to see the charges before she paid the rest.

The debt has now been passed back to the council. They only paid back 700 of what she had paid to the council. How much can they charge in total, I thought it was limited?

Anyone better at google than me?

V helpful! Your friend needs to register & then post in the bailiffs section.

Hmmm very rare for the debt to be passed back to the council!! I used to work in council tax. If she wouldn't pay the council and she is paying the baliff why would the council take the debt back? Their only course of action at this stage is to keep the baliffs calling round or bankruptcy (very rare although I have seen it done)

Baliffs charge a huge amount for their fees. But in all fairness your friend will have received (by law) the bill, reminders - at least one and a final notice telling her it will go to court, court letter, Liability Order which they will have obtained at court, baliff letter warning that it will be passed to bailiff, then the baliff stuff.

I know they have set fees for call outs and letters so she can get the information from the bailiff company and copy bills from Council Tax department.

Best of luck to her, my advice is always pay your mortgage and then council tax before anyone else, it is a government tax and they can take the money directly from your salary and the percentage rates are set by central government and they are high!!!!

Hi i had a similar experience with baliffs and got great advice from National Debt line www.nationaldebtline.co.uk and they sorted mine out for me, I sent a cheque to the baliff for £24.50 and that was all the national debt line told me to pay them as they had not entered my property and thats all they could charge me. Then they advised me to ask the council to take the debt back and if they would not then just sent any payments direct to them anyway. As they would have to accept it, and give thema plan of your earnings/outgoings and come to an agreement. I did that and now have just finished paying the debt off.
