Cheap shops and sites for toiletries, make-up and cleaning products

Any tips on cheap sites/stores for make up/cleaning products /toiletries. I take home 3200 after tax and pension but i am saving furiously for retirement in 5 yrs so put aside 1800 per month for that. That leaves 1400
for bills( no mortgage ) and food /car/entertainment/clothes and saving for Xmas . Council tax is ridiculously high at 460 a month ( band H).
I begrudge spending money on toiletries and cleaning products so keen to find really cheap alternatives . Husband pays for half of bills and food shop.

What have you got in your local High Street ?

We have several shops that sell things like this cheaply - Home Bargains, Poundland, B&M, Poundstretcher, Cut Price Discount, Savers, etc.

Then it is worth looking at prices in supermarkets - particularly Aldi and Lidl, but Asda, Tesco etc.

All depends what you have near you.

We have a Home Bargains but never sure if its much cheaper than Tesco/Boots.

Have you got a Savers? I think they are good for that kind of thing.

Another vote for Savers

Ichangedmynameonce · 12/07/2026 23:14

Definitely Savers. So much cheaper, but limited stock

Savers is good. We have Dealz which is similar. Used to be cheaper than supermarkets, but not anymore. I just watch out for offers at the supermarket. Or LIDL / ALDI own brand with certain items. Ran out of fabric softener a while ago & have found it makes no difference (was nice for DS when he was smaller), not going to buy it again. I tend to buy any shampoo / toothpaste / shower gel etc that’s in the clearance shelf. Or the dupes!

Have a look at https://peeko.co.uk/ . They seem to carry brand name cleaning goods and cosmetics, but not necessarily everything all the time.

Peeko - Big brands. Better value.

Savers. Great shop. But also. Be discerning about what you need. You can get by with dish soap and white vinegar and bleach if you’re being super thrifty. Buy a spray bottle and refill it.
For dishwasher and washing powder and loo roll and kitchen roll I get the massive packs from Kirkland (Costco).
For cosmetics I mainly buy from supermarket or Superdrug 3 for 2. And Lidl skincare. I’m not even trying to be thrifty really. I just don’t see the value in the branded stuff.

Oh, and I forgot Farm Foods - which, being mostly a freezer shop might not occur to you if you don't know, but their (quality) toilet roll is really excellent value and they often have good deals on things like washing powder. Some have quite a lot of other things from bin bags to shampoo.

The key is to know your prices. I think lots of these shops have some really good prices, but, if you have access to a few, then it works out better to get X from shop A, Y from shop B and Z from shop C.

If you don't have access to a few then the savings you make won't cover your petrol or taxi fare to another town.
