Urgent UC help

Does anyone know how it works when you have an older teen in education on your uc claim?

Our DC is now 17 and in college, this period they have taken them off our claim and their disability payment as the last date they were in college was the beginning of June. DC is returning to college in September but we are waiting to find out exact details due to send needs but will be same college.

should the date of course ending be the academic year or last physical day in college? We can’t afford to be without that money until September as it means we only get child benefit to support dc until September.

Just notify them on your journal. College start date and name of college. They will support until child is 19 in FE

That is not correct. The last payment uc will make for a child over 16 is the assessment period that falls before their last exam unless they’ve enrolled and have a place at college

It’s unfair but those are the rules sadly. Your young person may be able to make their own claim if they are not in full time education but you will need to ensure you keep uc updated.

I did try to speak to someone on the UC helpline but they were useless and couldn’t help at all. I’m currently waiting for a call back from citizens advice.

If there are any other claims DC would be entitled to, I would have to claim on their behalf as they are unable to due to their disability.

For our other DC who went to sixth form it was fine as it was a 2 year course so it covered the entire education period. This time each level is a separate year if that makes sense. We are expected to support a third person on money for 2 people for potentially 3 months. I think it’s about £800 loss per month. It wouldn’t be too bad usually but at the minute our money was already tight due to unexpected circumstances.
