Someone opened a credit account in my name

I’ve found out someone opened an account in my name last week for JD Williams with a 2k credit limit. They had my mobile number so I got a notification. I called them and it’s been closed and under investigation and I should hear back within 7 days. The scammers hadn’t used any of the credit yet. I feel really angry and violated and worried there will be more attempts to steal from me. I checked all my credit reports and it seems this is the only search so far. I’m really upset as we were looking to remortgage in the next few weeks/months and I’m worried this will make it impossible. I’m cautious about putting blocks on my credit as this may adversely affect me for applying for a mortgage. If anyone has any advise or gone through similar please let me know.

You need to check if contactng cifas will adversely affect you getting a mortgage because I'm not sure that it will.

I went through a few months of this. Several accounts were opened in my name. It’s so bizarre. I even had credit cards turn up at my house. I shut them all down and then it all stopped. I’ve no idea why it started.

Happened to me last week, a very account and they bought iphones. I managed to stop it and they have put a cifas marker on my credit file. That doesn't stop you getting credit, it just means more checks are done to make sure it's really you and itl also explain the credit account being opened and closed.8

Putting a freeze on your credit account will not affect getting a mortgage as long as you remove it before you apply.
You can only do it with Experian but it will give you some protection :www.experianplc.com/newsroom/press-releases/2023/experian-launches-creditlock-to-give-brits-an-extra-layer-of-protection-against-identity-fraud

Thanks everyone. It’s upset me more than I thought it would as it’s taken me a long time to get a decent credit score. I’ve opened an Experian account so will do the credit lock. They need time to authorise my address first. Going to apply for the CIFAS protection as it looks like it won’t affect me getting a mortgage. The lenders just need to do extra checks when I apply. According to my few mins of research anyway

I had my phone stolen then all my bank cards cloned in close succession. I put a CIFAS protection marker on my credit file for 2 yrs. No adverse effects on my credit score or being able to get credit.
