Has anyone found a social tariff worthwhile after the water bill rise?

Water bills went up again on 1 April 2026. The average bill in England and Wales is now about £639 a year, up £33 (5.4%). Some regions went up more, as high as 13%.

The bit worth knowing: around 2.5 million households can cut their water bill through schemes most people have never heard of, and the help is NOT automatic. You have to apply to your water company.

Two main routes:

  • Social tariff: if your household income is under about £26,000 (varies by company) or you're on certain benefits, you can get a reduced tariff. Discounts go up to 90% depending on the company.
  • WaterSure: if you have a water meter, get a qualifying benefit, and either have 3+ kids on Child Benefit or someone with a medical condition needing lots of water, your bill gets capped at the company average.

Also: if you live alone or as a couple in a larger home, switching to a meter often cuts the bill, because you pay for what you actually use. You can usually switch back within 24 months if it works out more.

Apply through your own water company. The Consumer Council for Water gives free advice.

If you move on to metered water, you cannot move back off it.

Never been on one but spent a few years at work doing eligibility assessments for Anglian's scheme.

The assessment was based on income less rental housing costs and an allowance for living expenses.

If you qualified the discount ran from 20-80% so certainly worthwhile.

Every company has its own scheme and criteria.

There's guidance here on help with water bills including links to social tariffs.
