Car insurance renewal is due but I may be selling it in a few months.

My car insurance is due to renew June 1st. I might be selling it around September time. Can I pay monthly then cancel or do I just pay the year as usual?
I did contact my usual broker but it was as clear as mud with them. Online chat not a bot though.

Are you replacing with a new vehicle at the same time? I recently part Xd mine to buy a used car. Insurers just adjusted my premium and I paid the difference. And a bastard admin fee of £30ish 😦. And put my voluntary excess up which was apparently automatic as car was newer. Fuvkers.

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz no I'll be sharing dh's car as he's retiring. I only work pt so won't need it much.

When comparing policies you want to choose one that allows you to cancel the policy and receive a partial refund, all without a huge admin fee.
Is there any chance you will own your own vehicle again as I believe a NCD is only valid for 2yrs, after that you have to start again?

I would just renew it monthly it's only a few pounds more and saves refund squabbling. I've just had the exact same situation and went for the absolute minimum cover for my old car as its waiting to be sold. I always use compare the market. You get a cash back via top cashback with them also

If you cancel an annual policy early you will receive a refund but may charged a premium short term rate for the period on risk.

Most pay monthly arrangements are based on the annual premium divided by 10 or 12 so the same principle applies to the refund.

I'd have a chat with current insurer and perhaps a broker to try and find the best deal.

We went down to one car for similar reasons last year but were fortunate in that the sale coincided with the change.

I went on compare and my insurer came up about £30 less. I'll ring them later after work. Glad yours worked out.
