Grandson’s matured Child Trust Fund affecting benefits eligibility and living costs

Grandson’s Child trust fund has just matured. He is autistic and unable to work . But it appears he is not eligible for benefit as the sum is above £16000. It seems against the principle oft CTF that it has to be spent on basic living expenses until it is down to £6000😡

Depending on the severity of his disability, he might be able to use it for a HOLD deposit. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/home-ownership-for-people-with-a-long-term-disability-hold#who-can-apply

He could then subsequently get a DFG https://www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grants/eligibility . I used this to do a wetroom and build a night carer sleeping space as well as building prep for track hoist, which meant I could then get a much more suitable hoist supplied. Obviously his needs will be different to this, but think about what enabling systems you can build in.

If you think about this carefully you might be able to secure his future. If he's unable to live independently or will need lifelong care, you need to do as much as you can now while he's younger. Adult social care is not the same. Whatever support you have around him now will likely be cut, so convert as much into solid structures as you can.

Home Ownership for people with a long-term disability (HOLD)

People with a long-term disability looking to buy a suitable home on the open market may be able to do so using the HOLD shared ownership scheme.

Well done for saving so much for him. The fact it’s hit over £16k is brilliant. He can use it to support himself while he tries out working

I find this comment very passive-aggressive.

OP very clearly said he is unable to work.
