Someone has booked a flight on my Mum's card.

She received this morning confirmation of a flight to Abu Dahbi a flight at the end of the month from Heathrow. She's on the phone to find out which card it has been debited from as the Travel Agent had to check their records.

What I would like to know is whether the Police act on things like this. Assumably someone is likely to turn up and try to board the flight - or do they get so much of this that they aren't interested ?

Your poor mum!
Does Martin Lewis's site have anything on this?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 20/06/2008 14:01

when it happened to my parents they gave the police the delivery address for the flat screen telly that had been bought on their card, and the police did nothing as far as we know

this happened with us once too...it was a return flight from china...the airline wouldn't give us the name/address of the person the booking was made under at the time but later we were refunded the money...however i don't think anything happened to descipline the person who did it.

Chocolateteapot · 20/06/2008 14:08

I thought that would be the case Norma. I'm still going to report it though out of principle. Eandz, glad you got your money back.

Dustystar, I'm going to have a look but I'm hoping the card company will deal with it. She is still on the phone trying to find out where it has been debited from. The travel agents did ring me back but I was on the phone and now the guy I need to speak to is out, he's back soon though. Amazingly, she is taking it all very well so far.

I spoke too soon, there have been more.....

The police won't care, in my experience. The crime has been committed against your Mum's bank, not her, and the bank will just chalk it up as another fraudulent transaction and not report it to the police. She can try to report it to the police herself but they probably won't want to know.

The person who defrauded me bought a new holiday wardrobe at Next online as well as airline tickets! It made me so angry that no-one wanted to do anything about it when you would have thought that for the police it would be an easy crime to 'clear up' as they would know where the perpetrators would be and when!

dustystar · 20/06/2008 14:11

Just read some info on the home office site and it says that she should report it to her card company and that they will deal with the police if necessary. Apparently its to cut down on admin or something like that.

We had 3 flights with British Airways on our credit card a couple of months ago - we notified the card co of the first (have online access so I minitor daily) and they stopped 2 more which we never even saw. The one that got through was refunded fairly soon afterwards. I hope your mum's is her credit card & not debit, Ct - those are more compolicated.

We were not notified by the airline though - that's interesting!

Previously someone ordered an XBox on our card, with a delivery address in Glasgow - that payment didn't get through but the police were interested (although they said it would be some kind of drop address, not someone's home).

dustystar · 20/06/2008 14:20

Are there more dodgy charges ct?

eandz · 20/06/2008 14:21

yeah ours was on ba also, using our ba amex card. amex called to make sure it was us.

Chocolateteapot · 20/06/2008 14:25

It is her debit card but the Bank have been OK so far by the sound of it. Apparently it will take 10 days to sort.

There are more, a total of £1700, starting with small items and then working up to bigger ones.

The flight booked was booked in her name and address though they got the spelling of her name wrong.

Your poor mum - I hope the bank are helpful. She'll probably have to sign some forms stating that the transactions were not hers and it will all be done. Funny that it was all booked in her name though - is it possible that this is a wider identity theft?

Chocolateteapot · 20/06/2008 14:37

I wondered about that, have asked the travel agency to report the number of the passport used to book the ticket.

Thank you all for your help, fingers crossed a couple of weeks and that will be an end to it. If not my brother can sort the rest out when he gets back off his holiday as he will be far more chilled out than me !
