Does anyone know anything about a tax rebate type of thing that people over 65 can get?

My mums neighbour has told her that he and his wife got a tax rebate/payment type thing. He says he got about £900 and his wife got 400, in fact he told mum that his wife has doubled her pension
He has told my step-dad to claim for it, but we have not heard of this,or wonder how to go about enquiring into it. Can anyone help?

Wouldn't it be the pension credit? See here

I think it might be something to do with the 10p tax rate debacle.

I really haven't a clue. Mums neighbour said it works out at £900 a year extra for him, and his wife gets 400 a year extra, and said it was soemthing to with having worked full time for more than 44 years.

You see my step dad doesn't get his military pension, despite doing 9 years, as apparently anyone who left before 1975(i think it was that date) doesn't get it, even though they served their country!
He can't seem to find any info on what the neighbour is on about though, and neither can I!

A tax rebate for working more than 44 years?

Sounds very strange.

"Men need to have 44 years' worth of NI contributions to get a full basic State Pension."

The only reference I can find that seems relevant.

I can't think of anything except:

  1. full state pension
  2. higher tax free allowance for those over 65
  3. minimum income guarantee - ensures a minimum level of income (google it)

I think this is to do with SERPS (a govt run scheme no longer in operation).

they can go to their local tax office to get advice and help - they are fantastically helpful. I went through my mum's stuff and realised she was paying tax on some of her interest. I gathered together all her stuff and guessed she was due a rebate so she trotted up and they did it all for her - not just for that year but for previous years too. she got a nice rebate, and does it every year now.
